How bad is the job market right now in Toronto? I’ve been applying but not hearing ANYTHING back

How well are ATK and Oliver Wyman known in Toronto / Canada? From what I understand they mainly have presence in US. Is that true? Do people hired out of Toronto offices work on US projects (mostly)? How do their salaries equate?

Do you all see a compelling future in your tax career? I’ll go first, I don’t see a compelling future working for a large PA firm in the long run because you have to work more as you move up. However, I do see a compelling future by using my knowledge and skills to open my own firm/business and work less hours as long as I make enough money which is $75k, or if I do work long hours, it’s because I want to.

Hi everyone just left my permanent role to go the contractor route. Currently employed through a staffing company so I am a W-2 but plan on going the independent route. They offer insurance and 401k. I understand I’ll need to start an LLC. Any advice or things you wish you’d have known when you first started? Would you advise I stay with the staffing? Need help on how to invest. We are positioned to pay off our house later this year. Expect to work for another ~20 years. 401k fully funded and have some company stock investments maturing over the next few years, but no investments outside of that. Kids have a prepaid college plan for certain schools. Emergency fund is solid. Where should I look to start investing? I have fidelity for my 401k, would they be good to open a taxable investment account with, or are there better options?

I’m job searching right now and applied for a job I was a little overqualified for just to shoot my shot and get my foot in the door with a great brand. The hiring mgr took the time to email me to tell me I was overqualified and offered to help me get connected to his network. He’s been so kind and helpful and I’m kind of in shock at his generosity. Even if an offer doesn’t come from it, is it weird if I send him a Starbucks gift card or something as a thank you? What’s appropriate?

CTR, contracts and department overhaul

our marketing dept is undergoing a complete overhaul. under old leadership, a $75k 12-mo contract was signed to a marketing group that handles our SEO, blog and everything Google Ads. All things I can and am in training to do. Current CTRs on G ads seem pitiful at no more than 0.75%. My meta ads coast around 4-6%. During this overhaul, would it be wise to not renew our contract, and negotiate for me to take over these roles and leverage a raise?

I’m interviewing for a start up and the role sounds interesting. Usually for the “test” part of the interview I’ve had to analyze data. This company wants me to develop a growth strategy that outlines key initiatives for growth, different opportunities, experiments I’d run, KPIs, and working cross-functionally.

Is this a lot for an interview?

I’m a little afraid of doing all this work to then just have them take my ideas and not hire me.
