If you have to counter, then I'd say you are taking the wrong approach.
I establish a range early in the process. I give them a range that is not a fake set of numbers. The bottom number is genuinely what I'd accept and is ~25-30% above my current TC.
Then if the offer comes in within the range, great. If it comes below, I can push back with a real rationale instead of randomly asking for another 10%. Like the fact that I gave a range on the first call and you came below. And if they push further, then I tell them I need 25-30% about my current TC. Stick with facts.
And if they still won't move, then I am fully prepared to walk.
If people are telling you they counter with 10-20% above, then they aren't negotiating based on value. And if you are afraid to blow up the whole thing, that also tells me you aren't negotiating based on your value.
