If you are in the office that day, you are pretty much obligated to go. There is no obligation to stay, however. I don't drink, so coming up through the ranks I joined for 30 minutes, talked to the leaders that were sponsoring, and left. Make the effort to be social for a little while - it will pay dividends.

The people who put themselves out there and network effectively absolutely go farther on average than.
Agree with P1. After 20 years, I have seen how effective networking is the best way to advance your career. Technical competence and working hard only gets you so far.
If you’re in a position to help someone, you’re more likely to help someone you know. It’s the same at every stage of your career. It’s not fair, but it is reality. Those work events present great opportunities to get to know colleagues and leaders in a casual/friendly setting.
Agree with just making an appearance so leaders thing you’re engaged. Then leave.

It probably depends on the event, how many people are invited and other office dynamics. If I think it will be fun, I go. If not, I don’t. But I don’t have to worry abt any promotions or people saying things abt me. I like the idea of going to be seen and then leaving.
Used to be all nighters now good for an hour or 2
On our team I don’t really see happy hours as having any connection to promotions
Networking is important, but you have to balance that with your personal life. When I was younger, I went to more. Especially pre-kids. Now, I go when my schedule allows, which is not nearly as much. I don't care what anyone says, my kid's basketball game is more important than a company event.
