If you want to go to trial, you want to do litigation. There are different types of litigation and not all go to trial frequently. Complex litigation is an option. Mass torts. Insurance defense will get you trial experience, but it will be lower pay than other areas of law and it is easy to get stuck doing it long term. High billable hour requirements and low rates. Heavy volume of cases. Insurers cutting hours and other issues. You get to go to trial a lot if you go to the right firm. ID can be different types of litigation depending on interest. You could do labor/employment, professional liability/malpractice, or personal injury defense. Construction law is also heavy litigation that has a lot of depositions but generally settle before trial. They certainly can go to trial. You could also go to the plaintiff’s side and do that kind of litigation as well.

Yup ID will get you the most experience, the least of everything else possible in life though. I’d say go plaintiff’s PI, at least maybe you win the lotto and you don’t have to bill.

Probably insurance defense…

Everyone is saying insurance defense, but also look at consumer collections. It is far from glamorous and more than a bit monotonous, but a busy shop will have you constantly in court and doing a trial a month or more.

This is what I wrote in another message but personal injury is big, try this: Employment litigation deals with many aspects, wrongful firing, at will hiring, discrimination, wrongful treatment, pay discrimination, sexual harassment, abuses, wrongful early termination, contract disputes, labor disputes, early outs, workers comp, social security, and a few more im certain. It's broad for sure and can be very rewarding. You can make a lot of friends. Great pay. Good luck and God bless.

I said yes to the Partner but now kind of regret it. This job has made me sacrifice my health and I don’t want to work those extra 3 days. I wonder what’s the best way to tell them.

Currently at a super conservative defense firm. I do really well but keep getting the criticism that I tend to just do things on my own initiative. I’m just predisposed to being decisive and rather autonomous. Besides being a solo atty, where would this skillset be better suited? Plaintiffs work?

I am a personal injury attorney making 79k with ability to keep 40% of anything I settle, bonuses for originating work for the firm. I am 1.5 years into practicing as a Plaintiffs PI attorney - I have a review coming up - suggestions on what I should ask for as a raise. I’ve settled a couple cases and working on a third settlement. I’m new to the practice area but cannot get a read on whether a raise is coming at review - nothing but positive feedback from both partners I work with, but doesn’t

I’ve been working at a rather prestigious midsized firm in a big city for almost a year and a half now. I have been having a lot of trouble picking up work from senior partners. We are required to bill at least 150 hours per month to meet our requirement. My months are typically only 110-130 hours. It seems like the senior partners already have their “go to” associate for things. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can increase my workload? I reach out for work pretty much weekly.

I work in a firm that is known for litigation defense. I’ve been developing my own plaintiffs practice as well. I am able to pay the bills with my hourly defense work, which gives me time to focus on a handful of high value PI case a year on contingency. I was recently negotiating a case and was told part of the reason the claims rep/OC was jerking me around was because they didn’t see me as a plaintiffs attorney. Is there any way to change this perception or does it just come over time?
