Which programming language should I learn to break into technical roles related to AI. I have a non-technical consulting background and am currently looking to expand my skills.

Become familiar with Claude Code or Codex + GitHub to start. All have courses / YouTube tutorials to get going.

Less about programming experience (helpful but not required with today’s tools). You need to understand SDLC, SDKs, ADK, APIs / MCPs, plus foundational ML, data engineering and security concepts.

Look into Prolog, it is a great decision making applications language . This is a great programming language in certain areas of AI. In my career I have learned and used many programming languages so don’t be tied to just one. Be more diverse in programming languages and skills and you will be a more valuable asset.

Fastest route to becoming AI-builder
1. Python
2. APIs + FastAPI
3. OpenAI API projects / MCPs
4. RAG and agents
5. TypeScript + React basics (optional but valuable)

agree.

for #3 you can choose either or, depending if you want open ai vs anthropic. or both if you want to be good at both tools

like

Python is a good one to start, and will help you learn the fundamentals of coding.

Unless you're gunning for a full SDE position, The fundamentals are far more important than which language now that AI can vastly accelerate learning a new language or converting something from one to the next. (IMO)

Use Claude and whatever language fits what you’re building.

start with Python, its relatively easy and covers a broad area. Data analysis -> stats & modeling -> ML -> vectors & maths -> gen AI

First, decide what area excites you. This is getting to be the age of citizen builders, leverage that angle. Use your domain knowledge and see what problems you want to solve. Keep that as your capstone/North Star and then learn.

Python is a good start for general things. Eventually if you discover a use case that absolutely needs performance, look at Rust etc. That might be Step 10 though.

Good luck!

So i have been fortunate that i have managed to go through my career without the need for a degree. I was lucky enough to have been hired by one of the worlds top consulting firms, worked with a whole lot of big clients and travelled a lot. It's gotten to the point where I am not even asked about the lack of a degree on my resume. Personally though, it bothers me. I have a whole bunch of certifications in my industry…but just no formal degree. (cont'd)
