It depends on your personal life.
If you’ve got a family or really value your work life balance, I’d do the full time option.
If you’re single and love the hustle, take the 2nd option.
I’d take high visibility and twice the $$$
Also it’s not twice the pay. It’s about $153k for 9 months of work. Which is less than the salary of the FTE position.
It would depend on my support system in the travel city, but the 9 month freelance would be ny choice.
You can jump on Bumble BFF and find some high quality homies pretty quickly.
Then my next question is … in your current city, what are the job opportunities? As you know, fully remote work opportunities are dwindling.
It sounds to me like … the FTE will allow you to stay in your current city for longer. The FL will transition you to a new city because that’s where you will meet new contacts, etc.
$850 x 22 days x 9 months = $168,300 and that doesn’t include weekends, which I bet there will be a few. More visibility, Less time and more money like I said.
Take the freelance - that’s cold hard cash in your pocket. I don’t know anything about the company but unless it’s one of the big behemoths, stock value can fluctuate. Not to mention there’s a difference in value between ISOs and RSUs, with ISOs you still have to pay to purchase the stock (ew).
Also it’s for 9 months - you’ll either walk away with great work on your resume or they’ll need to extend you (at which point you can consider raising your day rate or walk away if it’s been too stressful).
I feel you. I took an in house gig burnt out from Agency life and they offered a decent salary. 1 year in, I’ve probably produced the worst work in my entire career and rotted my brains doing dull work. But it’s been very refreshing working a 9-to-5, not feeling like a client owned every minute of my day, and finally having more control of my life.
If you need a break from the grind then the full time gig will hopefully give you that space to recharge. Just don’t rely on bonuses or stocks to meet your income. The only money guaranteed to you is salary.
#2. Work-life balance is life these days for me anyway.
55-70 hour work weeks mean 11+ hour work days. not worth it for $850/day.
if you are young. take #1. enjoy doing cool work. if you have a family or older. no brainer take number 2.
I’d personally go the 2nd route and enjoy the work life balance and security.
#2 for sure.
