Strongly disagree that the job selection in the military limits your future potential, especially if you’re just 4 and out. I forget the exact number from a study on this, but it’s more than half the people getting out of the military want to have a career that is different than what they did while in the military. You just have to make yourself more valuable to the market with education or training because the market doesn’t care that you served your country, but they will care if you bring value to the table.
I was wounded in 2005 in Iraq and I don’t think 75% of my coworkers even know I served. But they do know that I deliver results on projects and that they can trust my judgement. I’m sorry you’re struggling right now but use the education benefits/training that you’re entitled to and then the market will open up for you.
Actually I'm surprised this dude didn't use his GI bill to pivot.
I went from Intel to sales and am doing pretty well. I've also done procurement work.
Hard truth: no one is going to just give you a great high paying job because you’re a Veteran. Why would they? What tangible skills are you bringing to the table? Veterans don’t have a monopoly on hard work or leadership traits.
Assuming you have an honorable discharge, use your Post 9/11 benefits to go to college or attend trade school. Depending on where you’re living, you can expect $1,500-$3,000/month just in BAH payments (which is better than your $10/hour job); and still work part time while you’re bettering yourself.
Even in the military, you start at the bottom and receive training and Professional Military Education to be able to do your job. Civilian life is no different, you need skills/education in order to be successful.
Best of luck to you my friend!
