Thoughts about if/how to include military reserve service on resume? Don't want to be deceiving but also don't want to get passed over for interviews.

Context: prior AD, 5+ years post MBA, newish to reserves. Prior consultant, current entrepreneur but thinking about getting a corp job instead.

I would leave it off. It’s more likely to hurt you than help since most people don’t understand the reserves.

like

I left mine off. Legally they can’t pass you over but you also can’t prove they passed you because you’re a reservist.

like

Exactly my concern. USERRA website doesn't really seem to address omitting it.

I was AD for 10 years and retired after another 10 years in the reserves. I found out that putting my reserve service on my resume was a mixed blessing. My years of experience and leadership skills were an asset on my resume. However some employers were stand offish because of my reserve duty requirements and potential to get deployed, they will never say anything because of the illegality of discrimination against reservists and bad publicity, they just won't call you for an interview. It has been awhile, so not sure if this is still the case currently?

like

Good points. If it was just the weekends + AT, it wouldn't be as controversial. But the potential of schools and deployments can mean a vacant seat for months, which is more difficult to absorb the smaller the org and the more senior you become.

However, I'm starting to think about it in comparison to the large parental leave benefits that have become more popular these days, which kind of set the precedent for positions being regularly vacated for several months... Maybe this isn't that much different

My wife got passed over for two jobs for (what were very confident was) being in the reserves. The very next role she applied to without the reserves on her resume, she ended up getting the job.

As others have said, I don't think you gain anything by putting it on your resume. At least no benefit that offsets the potential risk.

like

I put AD on there but not reserve service

like

I put US Army (combined Reserve and Active) as one of my headers. It’s always served me well, I get a lot of callbacks where people ask about my time on the service. But I seek out companies that value military backgrounds.

like

I leave it on. Never had an issue. I can see how it might not be great if you're looking to work for a smaller company though. Maybe include it for only larger public companies?

like

I learned to not include I was in the Guard on mine (around 2015/2016) but did include a section on my last deployment 2009 time period) and put US Army, with all the bullets being specif to that deployment.

like

I was a reservist and always had it on my resume and never had an issue but I understand wanting to leave it off.

Why don’t you just leave your active duty experience only if you’re trying to include that you’re a vet

There is no way to prove you weren't hired bc of military commitment, so USERRA isn't going to help.

I have always had my national guard experience on mine and never had an issue..weird I always thought it was a plus to have military service

To be fair Mike Quinn does have some good advice.

His posts on the other hand may be too much.

I have not been on a project for over 3 months. Since I joined, I have been put in training. The training got extended by a month and now it's close to 4 months since I joined and without a project.

What should I do? People say that I'm lucky to get paid without doing any work, but it is stressing me out. I need the experience. The uncertainty is freaking me out, with rumours of layoffs and the certification program and all.

How do I get into a project? How long do I have to wait more?

What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? TIA!

Does anyone know how much time Microsoft HR takes to provide feedback after Hiring drive ? I had contacted my 3rd party recruiter contact person but he said the final feedback will come from HR or Hiring Manager only.

Interviewed for Meta exactly 2 weeks ago today. Contacted the recruiter last Tuesday and they said they were waiting to hear back from the hiring manager to discuss the interview results. Anyone that interviewed or gotten a job with Meta how did it take from the onsite to get your decision? Since I had to reach out to the recruiter and haven't heard anything since I assume they're interested in another candidate.
