But aren't we and office job? We are professionals, are we not? Don't get me wrong, I like wearing jeans and t-shirts as much as the next guy, but I can't believe this is even a complaint. Khakis and a polo isn't what I'd call an oppressive dress code.
At my site, im not sure anyone cares what anyone else is wearing.
I wear tennis shoes most days.
We wear jeans on Fridays.
It's not too restrictive in our district.
I'm suddenly very appreciative of my school. Our dress code is very lax compared to yours. Jeans are no problem at all here.
It’s a school-specific thing. Not all schools have the same requirements.

We wear whatever we want. I wear a t- shirt, joggers, and sneakers every day. So do my colleagues.
We are allowed to wear comfortable clothes. Jeans or whatever is ok,. Thank God !
You're not allowed to? I guess because typically elementary school teachers are more prone to giving in then to fighting. Also, some school board members are caught in the 60s with their attitudes regarding teacher dress. If you are in a union state you should be able to negotiate a more modern dress code. We can wear jeans with no rips and tears. I have all black Hokas that I wear on most days.
We are supposed to be in dress code but the admin’s favorites wear whatever they want the rest of us have to be business casual.
Sorry, didn't mean to like. Thats unfair!

I always wore jeans, t shirt, blazer, and sneakers . Nobody cared.
I think in elementary ppl dress much more laxed simply bc of the acting out behaviors, like you said. I know a kd teacher (elementary) who wears slippers during the day and her teammate goes barefoot. Nobody cares.

Don’t work elementary if you want to wear nice clothes. You’ll be changing your wardrobe very fast. Esp when you’re running after kids who bolt out the door or whatever. As long as you’re ‘on it’ in terms of helping out/chasing the kid/whatever is needed- they don’t care if you wear jeans. Even some principal wears jeans and tennis shoes in elementary depending on who our ‘high fliers’ are
This was a huge shift for me coming out of working in a hospital where we dressed up every day. I had no interest in spending more money on another wardrobe when I got into education where most of my years were spent in elementary. I guess if I was pd more?
I wear sneakers every day. My feet would require me to find an office job if I had to wear dress shoes.
Rising Star
New principal asked for “professional dress.” Nothing changed. Homecoming dress up week featured “dress like a professional” day to coincide with picture day. Nothing really changed. I wore slacks, dress shirt, tie, and sports coat like I did the first year I taught 35 years ago. Then I ditched the coat and looked like I did for the next 20 years. Jeans were for payday Fridays only. A PD clinician once told of a young teacher who complained his students weren’t treating him respectfully. The clinician’s advice? Dress up and wear a tie. I noticed that I don’t have as many behavioral issues on the days when I do. Yes, our professional standards were changing before COVID and have continued downward since.
However, I’ve learned the hard way. Comfortable shoes that prevent pain trump fashion any day.
I wear jeans. It’s a district and even individual school call.
We can wear tennis shoes as long as they’re all black and we wear pants that go down to our ankles. We can’t wear tennis shoes if we’re in skirts.
Well that’s excessive lol! I don’t own many pants that go to my ankles. I walk 7k plus steps a day. My admin is amazing and loves my outfits and I wear hey dudes or tennis shoes almost everyday.
At one time
My orthopedic dr required me to only wear tennis shoes because my arches were falling and causing great pain. A para made a comment I was out of dress code in my converse (the only shoes skinny enough I could go up a size and have my orthotics in that didn’t run blisters) so I went to my principal to ask. She said as much walking as I have to do with my job I could wear whatever shoes I wanted to keep my feet happy and didn’t need a dr note.
I don’t mind following a dress code but I draw the line at shoes! I spend a ton of money on shoes for my feet so I’m going to wear whatever I like.
We can't let professionalism go completely out the window. Before long well degrade into a society of total trash. That said, I do agree a little. Basically at my school we only have to wear dress pants for men, and no jeans unless it's Friday.
I'm cool with that.
I wear tennis shoes every single day. We could wear jeans only on Fridays.
