Drug traffickers will continue to discover methods to deliver drugs as long as there is a demand for them. There are a multitude of variables, like addiction, social and economic difficulties, and cultural issues, that feed this urge.
Drug trafficking is a lucrative industry with significant profit margins. I'm pretty sure this is the primary motivator for traffickers to take risks and continue trafficking despite legal repercussions.
Technological and transportation advancements have made it simpler for drug traffickers to carry narcotics across borders and throughout the world. They've fully taken advantage of how much easier it is for them now.
It all boils down to the government. Political instability, especially in developing nations, can foster drug trafficking. Trafficking groups would use weak or corrupt governments and law enforcement agencies to promote their activities.
I blame drug policy changes, like decriminalization or legalization, since they open up new avenues for drug trafficking groups. Because marijuana has been legalized in certain jurisdictions, there has been an upsurge in marijuana trafficking to states where it remains illegal.
