Because we live in a capitalist society where more money for you means less money for the fat cats in charge. Duh?
Sometimes that’s true. But sometimes we’re all busy and we don’t necessarily spend time poring over everyone’s salary. Especially firms who don’t have a set process for yearly evaluations and so forth. Remember, the people who run the firm also have a full law docket. It’s 2 jobs rolled into one.
That’s a poor excuse “wearing two hats” HR or a designated person should be on top of salaries and the going rate. At the end of the fiscal year do the partners ask themselves when they receive their salaries and bonuses are my staff being taken care of?
When I started practicing law 25 years ago they gave lawyers a dictaphone. Most partners used it. And my secretary kept an actual calendar filled out by hand. We used WordPerfect on DOS platform. You had a fax machine for sending things. Each firm had a telex number on their letterhead and even then I didn’t know what that was. I used to give my secretary written time sheets. The list goes on. Things change. Calendaring is done by a software, most lawyers enter their own time and send their own emails. No one faxes anything. So yeah, roles have shifted some over time. Putting all that aside, all I’m saying btw is that there’s no harm in asking for a raise
