I refused to do one for Warby. But companies are free to make it difficult to apply, that weeds out the good people who have other things to do or getting offers already. It's up to the individuals to set their own standards
Devs also often get code problem-solving tests.
Huge supporter of case studies as part of the candidate evaluation. Have been burned way too many times by people who talk a good game but can't actually deliver. Nothing that should take more than 30 minutes to an hour. If it's too much to ask then it's not a good fit and at least we've all figured it out early.
Sounds like they failed the test by not providing a Mac. I would have taken one look and left.
I get tests for certain roles. Like, if you're hiring me at a title or two above where I am. But do NOT take my test, use it in your strategy work for multiple clients, and offer me a 6-month contract instead of the full position that was on the table when I completed the test, and not pay me. Ahhhh feels good to vent. (Needless to say, I did not take that role.) Honestly though, do them when it is worth it, and hopefully it's a learning opportunity. You can certainly learn a lot about a company by the way they treat you in this process.
Journalists get writing tests all the time. It's not uncommon but it is frustrating.
Data Analysts and Proofers also get tests here.
Sometimes.
Describe said test.
Im in PR - we give a test to everyone, from account managers to editors to planners ect
Had image manipulation not to bad. Critique some old ads, easy. But them they wanted 3 ads to brand guidelines with shitty incomplete assets so it was impossible especially with 30 min left on a computer not with my usual settings and especially not on a Mac. Dam control button.
I give tests to my analysts. very common for programmers, finance, consultants, etc.
I was given a "test" for a producer role where I had to do this whole song and dance presentation to all the VPs for a according to them (TNG) a mock RFP exercise...never again. Been also sent scenarios and how to address. Resume/references aren't good enough anymore but I call BS on it
I had to do a test, took about 2 hours, but that was after 4 interviews so it was worth it
Been tested for every Dev role I've taken.
Ben tested on every job I ever applied for and secured. Writing test, scenario planning test, senior advisory board at you do, writing an entire client plan/ programme based on a fictional brief...
