Not true. There are increasingly more and more direct partner elects.
I've seen McKinsey hire entire teams partner down in verticals they are trying to build. For example, in restructuring a few years back they took a whole Grant Thornton restructuring team.
So I think if you are joining the generalist track then it’s important to go through the mckinsey way and learning the toolkit. Especially coming from non-MBB. However, if you are joining a practice or specialist role then it’s not important
I am a direct-elect McK Partner from another consulting firm (not Big-4). Even as a partner, I was staffed as an Associate on my first study and then EM to learn the Firm’s problem solving approach. While that was initially off-putting, it was (in hindsight) immensely valuable to subsequently build followership. The environment I originally came from was quite top-down directive in its problem solving approach, and partners often declared the expected answer early in the study and expected teams to spend the rest of the time validating those hypotheses. McKinsey’s problem solving approach is thorough and exhaustive, and can be frustratingly tedious and inefficient to someone who believes they have a good sense for the answer on Day 1. But it’s very important to demonstrate that you respect the process
We also had a couple move from McK to ATK. I usually see it more at a practice level.
At junior ranks, assimilation is an issue as you need worker bees that are standardized and most of the consulting firms including McK, ATK struggle with assimilating without them learning the atk way or McK way or BCG way or in other words getting standardized. Associates post mba and Analysts post undergrad are the best place to start at our firm.
When they join below grade it’s just to get their feet wet and are quickly moved to the right level.
Agree, they do hire direct. We’ve had 2-3 Partners in the past year (innovation and digital areas) and a few at the level below.
We had a couple move to Mck and a couple to BCG. Usually happens at partner level in certain industies.
Untrue - they are known for hiring the most external / advanced hires out of all MBB
@Deloitte1: I know the people you mean. One of them was a worthy Partner hire. The other, I think half of us are glad to see the back of him.
Thank you P1, super insightful. I imagine “the process” is designed to be evidentiary; I.e. a scan of issues, hypothesize, collect qualitative and quantitative data to test those hypotheses?
Also, other firms often propose work on the strength that they’ve done this before. When McKinsey goes in, is it sort of saying that “we don’t know the answer to your question but trust our rigorous process to arrive at an informed answer for you”?
