“Decline”
I always go with this rule: if two meeting clash - I always attend the meeting with the larger group - and therefore difficult to reschedule and politely ask to move the meeting with the smaller group. If impossible, I join the one that my manager believes is more important (I am an associate)
If you're not doing it already, make sure you actually accept meetings you intend to go to. Any tentative time on your calendar is up for grabs.
There are also plenty of times people get double booked just in case they can make it but it's no big deal if they don't.
If it’s an engagement-related meeting, I always ping the sender to:
A) Remind them that I’m double booked
B) Confirm why I’m needed – Do they need me to lead? Am I moral support or “backup” in case client gets feisty? Working session? Is it simply visibility?
C) Provide any offline help I can to avoid rearranging my calendar while also making sure sender feels they confident they have what they need
D) Rearrange calendar if necessary
Always lots going on for all but I’ve sat in enough pointless meetings that I feel it’s good to clarify why you’re needed before harpooning everyone’s calendar, including your own 😌
Depends on whether a small or large group, how well you know them and the seniority involved. If it’s a large meeting you just have to bend to the senior persons schedule unless it causes a major issue. If smaller and you know everyone, ping the organizer and work it out.
Multiple factors at play, so no straight answer:
> is anyone able to cover one of the meetings for you?
> how many active participants in either that rescheduling could be more complicated?
> who scheduled respective meeting?
> internal/external?
> who booked first?
If it’s two client meetings or two internal meetings, I decline the second/last one and explain I have a prior commitment. If it’s a client requesting and I have an internal meeting scheduled, I’ll do what I can to reschedule the internal meeting or just skip it if that’s possible.
