Good grief this is insane. I guess the answer is that this is exactly why they DON'T attract passionate, qualified educators. Most of the wonderful educators I know have left the field.
I know. We see so many leaves every year I stay... I don't blame them. Heck my car broke down last week of school. And now I'm catching Uber and really feel like leaving the field because I can even afford another car to get to work once school opens back up. The pay doesn't line up with the work we do.
That's painful to see, but it's not too surprising. The US has become a country opposed to education, to be honest. Half the country can only read at a sixth-grade level, and in years to come that will probably go lower. It's sad, but people are content with what's going on, so that's where we are.
Sixth grade education in economics and vocabulary is all you need to read a newspaper, or act as president. 😂
Ok, so this posting appears to be from a for-profit virtual company. And likely part-time. And I suspect they only care if you meet the necessary certifications. You can check your passion and expertise at the door.
I worked with one of the bigger and well known companies part-time up through this past school year. Frankly I thought they were overly nickel-and-dime-ing my hours, always trying to increase the work load expectations within those hours and basically not putting out a lot of extra as the philosophy shifted more toward a focus on profit. I felt like I was part of an assembly line. Teacher appreciation “month” was a lot of hype. What did they give us? An offer for ID cards - we had to take the picture, pay for the order, and request for reimbursement. No thanks. We used to get company swag for Teacher Appreciation and BTS but that disappeared, likely because it cut into the profit margins. Pay and benefits for full time weren’t bad - also remember you work from home which was the #1 draw. Got an annual bonus about 6 weeks into the new year. I started at $20 an hour five years ago and was up to about $23. Wasn’t horrible for part time work, but the corporate rules and expectations pushed too far in the end and it stopped being worth it for me.
Thanks for sharing. IMHO part-time must pay more than average per hour, just for the hassle of being only a part of an average income. It would make more sense, considering that you need to find another gig to supplement your existence. Flipping burgers with no education pays way more, in many US states, today.
Given inflation, today’s salaries are basically the same as 1985 in Texas.
I teach HS Science, ALL! Salaries are only 20k more than what I made when I first started teaching in 2003 in NY. They make 6 figures now with that much experience. Shameful the rest of the country doesn't have strong unions anymore. South East is THE WORST! Then there are weak unions that can't even keep good teachers in the classrooms. Hence, poor-performance schools erupt everywhere. Keep the locals working local. Smfh.
