WIL with kids - What time do you show up to the office and what time do you leave? I’ve got young kids and have to do drop off and pickup - also have an hour commute. What is your firm culture like, especially for those in big law? Anyone have partners who care if you are physically out of the office a little early (but then sign on to do work later?). Just curious how this is perceived at other firms. I feel like I’m just being self-conscious about coming late and leaving early to the office

Btw- reading these responses, I will observe that in my experience leaving around 5 and logging back in later is definitely a product of post-pandemic life. Before you’d see many more (most?) people in the office until very late at night (I’m in NYC). Post-pandemic, i see even see young single first years out the door at 5 every day and then logging back on from home.

Firm/group dependent but I’m a 7th year and work full remote. Duck away whenever I want for a facial or to get my nails done and pick up my kids from school at 2pm when school is in session. Get all my stuff done and have backing of rainmakers. I will work weekends and holidays if needed and they know that, so I think I’ve just built enough political capital and trust with them to make my own schedule

I just recently lateraled. At my old firm I would come in around 9-9:30 and leave anytime 3-5. No one asked me about it but I always felt comfortable saying it was for kid stuff if someone did. At the new place I’m trying to build a good reputation. I show up to the office at 9 usually but this week one of the kids had a doctors appointment in the morning. I showed up around 11am and no one cared. I usually leave after 5pm, but my office is right by the door exit door and people start leaving around 3 and I’m usually pretty alone by 5. I’m also pretty alone at 9am to be honest, with most people coming in around 10. I’m at a biglaw firm that is headquartered in CA but I’m at a satellite office in Boston. Culture at both my old place and new place leans more laidback, but the first place was noticeably more strict.

This is superrrrrrr group and office dependent. At my old biglaw firm in a secondary market, I was “late” coming in if I showed up at 9:15 - everyone got in before 9. But at the same firm, one associate was a dad to two young kids handling pickup, and made it known to everyone he worked with that he had to leave the office around 4:30 for pickup and would be back online later in the day. He was always very clear about communication, which folks seemed to appreciate

At my current firm, I’m the first person in at 9:15, people are usually all in by 10:30-11. I’m also the first to leave, right at 5 but I keep tabs on emails and of course respond after that. At some places, I know me leaving at 5 wouldn’t be OK, but I like to think I’ve established myself as reliable and responsive so it matters less

I don’t have kids but elder care duties. I agree with the political capital along with the firm/group considerations. I work in multiple practice areas and all the partners are different. However, they know I’m reliable and will get stuff done. Communication is key. If I tell my partners I’m dealing with personal needs, they rarely press me about something that is not genuinely urgent.

It was rough for me in BigLaw. While the firm itself tried to be accommodating, the partner I worked with was anything but. I ended up needing to leave because it was not sustainable. The firm I'm at now doesn't care as long as the work gets done.

Try Resnick & Louis, P.C., They are very flexible. The work is fully remote. You get a lot of files, but as long as you bill your 2000 hours, you are in complete control of your time.

I’m so miserable every day is painful. I want to go tell pre-law school me it’s not worth the debt because you will hate this career and then feel trapped by the debt. And then I want to come back to present day, quit this life-leeching, soul-sucking job and start over doing something else entirely. Too much? Oh well. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I’m trying to get all my ducks in a row for when I quit here at the end of next month… I am taking a break to figure out what I want to do, so I will be unemployed for a time. Do I have to notify the ARDC of this change (IL licensed)? Do I have to immediately switch to inactive status or can I stay active in case I decide to keep practicing law just a few months later? Thanks in advance fishies!!
