You are always going to have obligations, whether that’s to internal or external people.
Can you expand on what you mean by not having that mentality? Can you not fulfill other people’s asks because they are asking too much to get done in a normal 8-9 hour workday? If so, then public accounting is not for you because in order to advance, you have to be able to put in extra unplanned effort sometimes. That is the nature of client service.
It sounds like you aren’t a people pleaser because of a toxic environment - I.e people not recognizing you as a human being and instead just as a resource to throw at the clients in exchange for money.
If that is the case, then I would recommend an industry role where you aren’t expected to pull constant crazy hour weeks. Typically, industry roles are less toxic than public accounting because attrition is power and people stick around more, so they are more incentivized to respect you so that you don’t leave and make their lives harder. The public accounting model is about churning through low cost employees, which will always be dehumanizing.
Thank you for all your input. It's greatly appreciated. I definitely don't know if I should continue to be in public accounting or go work in the industry. There are definitely things in public accounting I don't want to give up. But my chances of being in a toxic environment seem a little high to me so I'm uncertain if that'll change if I go to industry because I've never worked in industry before and it's really hard to know the culture until you actually start working there. And a friend is doing great at a company doesn't necessarily mean I'd do great. So a lot of things are unknown and I'm hesitate to make a change.
For mentality, I see partners that are always so upbeat, so happy to handle client requests with no complains. When they talk about providing good client service, they definitely are. Maybe I've only seen the positive side of them. They're so calm even with ridiculous requests with a can do attitude. Sometimes I'm copied on those emails and I would be freaking out. Maybe I'm just immature and don't have a super positive attitude. ☹️
I mean, client serving roles do require you to serve clients… they don’t pay our fees to be friendly, it’s an exchange. The day you’re of no use, they move on to another provider.
