I have window film on all my windows. I did one shade darker on upstairs windows vs downstairs. I think it does help. The films available today are better than what I used 20 years ago but can also get really expensive for the highest tech stuff. 20 years ago I did about 33 windows. Mostly large two piece windows with 2 3x3 panes for each window. It was like $2500 at the time. Recently I looked into doing a low tint high heat transfer film in two west facing windows in our rental property. I think it was like $300/window and we decided not to do it.

I looked at what I put on my house 20 years ago and it’s a Vista film with 45% visible transmission and around 40% solar rejection. I’m actually surprised that the visible blocking is so high. Knowing that it would give me more confidence to go with something like a 60 or 70 - especially if you are in a sunny climate. I used a 3M Ceramic 70 on my car and you couldn’t even tell that it was there.
I did this when I rented an old home years ago and I did find it helped.
