I have never taught in Texas but know a few who do. I suspect pay is generally higher in PA. The national education association lists 2024 average teacher salary in PA at 74,945 and TX as 60,716! https://www.nea.org/resource-library/educator-pay-and-student-spending-how-does-your-state-rank
I’d also compare pensions. Is your PA pension pre or post the 2010 change? I would hesitate to leave if you’ve been teaching long enough to have the better pre-2010 change pension plan. (and salary of a veteran teacher)
I would also look at things like state policies on vouchers and school choice. With the current political presidential plan to minimize the deparment of education and push those responsibilities to individual states, I would carefully compare where things currently stand in any state I would consider moving to. https://www.texastribune.org/2024/11/06/texas-house-greg-abbott-school-vouchers-funding/
From a personal stand point… I switched districts during a divorce. It’s a lot. Getting divorced, starting a new job, and moving are all in and of themselves overwhelming. I wouldn’t recommend all three at once.
Good luck to you.

I LOVE the cold weather. Finally it’s getting colder out. Yay! Woke up to 36 degrees and bummed it went up to 47 degrees. But it was super sunny all day which is a plus. Love going on hikes in the snow w my dog bc I can no longer participate in snow skiing, snow boarding, tobogganing, etc. like the rest of my family.
Summers are way too hot and humid. Texas is humid too as is Florida. Humidity is my bodies enemy lol
I don’t remember the horrible humidity as I was growing up. I praying we get snow this year and so far the forecasts are favorable. ❄️☃️🥶🛷🎿🏂⛷️🌨️
The grass is always greener on the other side. If you want to transplant your roots, that’s great, I wish I could do that but has to be for the right reasons.
My sister lives in Texas. You can find a job, but not sure you could say it would be "good". The pay in Texas is really bad. I guess it would be warmer, but can you take 50 days in a row of over 100 degrees with possibly super high humidity? I'd rather have the cold.
I grew up in Texas, and it DOES get very cold there. It doesn't snow a lot, but it does ice every year without fail and everything shuts down. As someone else said, it might be warmer down in the very southern part, but up in Dallas where I'm from, it absolutely averages 30 or so degrees all winter long. And the summers are brutal. We track days in a row at or over 100. I just looked it up, and in Dallas it's 42 days, but in Austin, it's 45 days and set just last year. And unless you're in the desert/west, it's incredibly humid. Like it's 50% humidity in the winter. In the summer, it's 60+%. We did get very nice thunderstorms, however.

How long is your winter?
California, might be a refreshing change !! I have a cousin who is a principal for the L. A. School district. If you are looking for warm weather and a diverse school district.

My son is in sales close to LA. He told us that sometimes it looks like it’s snowing (we live in Michigan) but it’s really just ash from the fires.
I worry about him breathing that shit in but…🤷🏻♀️
He has been talking about moving back to Mich., but we’re not getting our hopes up
I completely understand—winters just seem to drag on and get colder every year! Texas could be an awesome change! The warmer weather is a huge plus, and they’re often looking for teachers with experience in both elementary and middle school. Depending on where you go, some districts offer pretty good pay and benefits too!
Do you speak Spanish? When I graduated in 1988, the Southeaster states were only hiring bilingual teachers.
I live in central Oklahoma. If you're thinking about Texas for warmth, you might consider the southern part of Texas. It seems as though Dallas gets the same temperatures as Oklahoma, and we get down to 0 degrees fahrenheit every few years. But the worst part of winters in this part of the country is the frigid wind which finds every tiny gap in clothing and tears away your warmth.
I’m in Texas, and it depends on your years of experience. The pay may be a bit lower, but the larger districts pay a starting wage of 80,000 for struggling campuses. So, it depends on what you can handle. That’s in Houston.
Also, the cost of living is less here, so it balances out. I hope this helps.
