With all the tariffs, maybe it's time to tariff off shoring. Might save the accounting industry yet. Or I might be giving a couple partners a heart attack.

Lol yeah a tariff on offshoring would shake things up, probably not in a way the big firms would love, but hey, it’d be nice to see more jobs stay local. Though, I can already hear the partners clutching their chests at the thought. Bold idea lol

It would be helpful if more roles and not just accounting were not offshored. Maybe more U.S. citizens would have any easier time when starting in their career and eventually advancing. This would also apply to large corporations that open offices in Europe and India.

I've said this so many times. SO. MUCH.

Also, I don't see this heavily affecting firms other than Big4 and possibly BDO/RSM. It'd definitely raise the market rates and affect industrywide. But I think immediate pains will be on those using offshore instead of tech.

Not saying my firm is using tons of tech, but we are not using tons of offshore to keep ourselves afloat.

Ok

This was part of TCJA - look up GILTI income. It is still cheaper to use delivery centers.

Not this take again

Question about remote job negotiations

I'm currently interviewing for a remote role for a company based in NY.

The thing is I'm based in a different city (southern U.S.)

My question is:

When it comes time to talk compensation, should I base the market rate for the role on my city of residence or NY?

Would it make sense to ask them directly how they determine comp for NY-bases vs. other city-based employees?

Dumb questions but genuinely curious:

1) Let’s say you’re a recent undergrad candidate with no internships on your resume. What’s the deciding factor that you’re qualified for Advisory vs Tax vs Audit? Is it school, gpa, etc.?

2) Why can’t you switch from Tax to another SL without having to pull strings? I understand that there’s a difference in tax vs book experience but why does the Accounting field gatekeep other SLs? It’s not like we’re incapable of learning other areas.
