If you left public accounting for an industry job, what kind of industry job did you take? What kind of company did you go to? Do you feel like your work is more meaningful/fulfilling?

I’m a SM financial reporting and technical accounting at a public company. I do feel like my role in industry is more fulfilling than in audit because I’m now doing something for my own company and not just checking whether the client did something correctly. I was in audit so while there is some value in it, it’s hard to take pride in work when you’re juggling multiple clients. Some people do find industry boring but I guess I got lucky as I still get to work on various things.

I went to industry for a bit. A Fortune 50., in a role in my specialty. The work was excruciatingly boring, and the politics were worse. I boomeranged back to public, but I got sick of PA hours and demands during COVID, so I went government. Waiting to see how it turns out, since I'm still in the training period. It's hard to say if the work is more meaningful, but at least it's interesting.

I spent a year in tax investigations where I believe I was thriving ( I was going to be an assistant manager in July 2023), I had a lot of assistant manager jobs, I even drafted a Code 9 report to HMRC which my manager said was 80% of an actual report, he then added the 20% and submitted it.
After I realised I couldn't maintain all the unpaid overtime I was working I decided to take a turn and go to compliance, so now I work in CT compliance. I feel very surpressed.

Are there many legitimate ethical hurdles when switching from insurance defense to plaintiff’s work? I received a 2 year continued service agreement costing $12,000 in effect fot individuals who 'leave voluntarily' within the allotted timeframe. After you are stealth laid off, other than job search, what do you do? I assume they won’t give you work and even if they do, you can politely decline? How do you feel about you are not progressing anymore and seeing other people progressing in their career? I have no intention to make partner, but still feel a bit stuck not doing that much.

I left Audit at a midsize firm to join KPMG erp implementation consulting about 6 months ago. So far they seem to only want to staff me on projects with a heavy focus on technical accounting and audit. Spoke to a lot of others who have left and seems like being pigeonholed or staffed on projects not related to the actual core work of the practice is the common reason. I've been on the fence about whether I should stay and hope to be staffed on better projects in the future or leave soon...

Are private companies easier to work at than public companies in accounting? We have such an accelerated close deadline at the publicly traded company I’m at now, I really hate the inflexible tight deadlines and analysis seems to drag on forever after that. We also close AP/AR very early in the month yet that doesn’t stop payments/receipts from happening so we’re constantly adjusting our accruals until the end of month. Do private companies start their close after the month actually ends?
