We don’t give gifts at work
We have a national staffing model and the team I work with day to day isn’t local. It would be inappropriate to ask for each other’s home addresses or bring gifts to the client site. We are also accustomed to expensing everything and there isn’t a fund to expense gifts for each other. I would really just find it bizarre to get a gift from a coworker (or anyone I don’t know well/on a personal level) just for the sake of exchanging gifts. Over the years if I have a coworker who has become a friend outside of work and we live in the same place we would include each other in a non-work-related holiday party or gift exchange.
Usually its something with the company logo on it - a mug, t-shirt, etc. Occasionally a giftcard for like Amazon or something. For specific departments/teams, there can be variability depending on what the manager wants to do.
In the local office we have the traditional Secret Santa, buy the boss a gift routine. Believe it or not, Christmas is a favorite time of year for our Asian offices as well.
My director gave all of us a bottle of wine last year. I also received small gifts like a card/candy from people I work closely with.
Giving wine would make me very uncomfortable. What if someone were recovering from an addiction?
