I wish I had good advice for this—I find myself in the same position. Went from military to manufacturing/heavy industry operations and while I enjoy the work I’m getting so tired of being the only woman and watching the organization do “check the block” training on DEI while changing no hiring practices whatsoever.
So far the best I’ve been able to manage is to somewhat disassociate from work. I don’t bring my whole self to work, just the professional and not the personal. This is by no means a solution, just what I’m doing to get by right now. I want to pivot to something new but don’t know where to go yet.
With every micro aggressions or uncomfortable situation I find myself in, I get closer and closer to freelancing. It may not solve all of my problems, but I’d be in control of the situations which don’t benefit me.
I feel the same way, I’ve worked in other industries where there’s more diversity, but distribution and manufacturing by far are dominated by older white men. I’m the only woman of color and youngest in my practice.
Sorry to hear that! What specifically makes you feel burnt out, the inability to see change in your industry/company?
I left manufacturing and moved to IT project management for digitalization projects (so also touching manufacturing). This means one male dominated area to another.
My goal is to develop further in IT and eventually either start freelancing or move to a company which support more diversity. I’ll take any tips and recommendations anyone offers
