I was recently told by a producer to prep for a mix. I said ‘no problem! Does the mixer have any specs I should know about? Any file types he prefers for ref pic and audio prep?” She gave me a blank look and said ‘what are you asking me? I’ve never heard of a mixer having specs’ 🤦🏻♀️
I know what both are (phew!) but that is a little depressing - hope you clued them both in - all we can do is try to attempt to fill in the learning gaps as they come up (I know I spend time with our junior producers teaching when I can). That said, I’ve always heard it referred to as a two pop (v. beep)!
There’s way less barrier to entry nowadays, and a ton of people are finishing videos without doing a handoff.
Producers have always learned as little technically as is expedient for them
I think we’ll be getting more and more of this unfortunately. Editors (and sound engineers) will just have to hold producers hands more now. Not sure why people are getting jobs when they don’t have any experience. Is it just cause of the digital age maybe?
🤦♀️ And when they do place a 2-beep, it’s not placed 2 seconds before picture start. Their audio tracks are all over the place and you spend 3 hours organizing their prep, then get an email from the producer saying the creative director made changes to picture after it was “approved” as you’re printing your “final”mix.
Don’t see myself getting fired for that, it’s been 12 years and not once mentioned in 100s of mixes but duly noted. I hear you RE it’s mostly about redundancy which I do value
SIP1 - 2 pop and 2 beep, and even 2 plop are all common names for the same thing. If I remember correctly, beep tends to be more American, pop more UK. I use beep and pop interchangeably.
