Recently left the Big4 without a job lined up. I’m hearing all my friends talking about busy season woes and I’m so grateful to not be in that position. I keep thinking of the long hours and it’s making me not want to job hunt. I’ve been looking at industry related tax roles, and generally like accounting but am open to exploration. Is there any such role that gives good comp, great work/life balance (I don’t even wanna be near 60 hours), and overall interesting role/company?

The switch would open me to be closer to family for support and the have a nursing prog,since the benefits are attractive and I’m looking forward to the future growth. The thing is they claim i only have experience of 7 years and offering me less than what I make now. My company blames my generation for not being able to hire everyday. “You guys don’t want to work” coming from some overweight, racist, old coaster. Just got a freelance gig for $1250 for 2 shoot days, but they’re asking for hourly rate for prep days. Not sure what rate to give them & if I should base it on a 10 or 12 hr hourly rate. So lately I’ve been using the interns to get the engagement and work papers set up so I can go in and do the return. I don’t think it’s fair for their growth. I’ve seen managers do it so I’m taking part in it. But what do you think? It does help make me more energy but I can stop doing this too.

I just spoke with a software architect that went back to school to learn software engineering after law school because it was more lucrative and had less hours. He’s worked his way up and has the skills and authority to work 6:30am-10am and gets to work remotely. We discussed that results/outputs is better than billable time like in law and public accounting. Yet, his parents and others would view him as “lazy” but he does his job and makes a fantastic living. Time>Money and Results>Hours
