Bosses that tell you to “go” without any direction and then complain about the results. 🖕
A woman who ruined other women’s confidence and a few of their careers.
Martin Sorrell
HUGE micromanager. Would completely rewrite everything anyone put in front of him. Explain condescendingly how to "write like a writer" and then when the client would point out flaws, he'd finger point at the writers whose work he rewrote. Massive ego. Couldn't get out of his own way.
Bosses who say "We" or "let's" when they really mean you. Was genuinely confused as to who was going to do the work the first time my boss said "let's put together a deck." I hate that passive shit.
Also, fuck the boss who just told me last week we owe our client 2 quarterlies by EOW. He doesn't keep track of the SOW and now I'm the one fucked.
No backbone. Approach was to go into client meetings just saying sorry. Refused to ruffle feathers because they knew their own skill set was lacking. Made huge deals over nothing. Heard the client didn’t like someone on their PR agency team and the next day our whole team was scrambling to pitch PR to them with no client desire and no direction. This happened multiple times.
Creative director who can’t lead, critique, come up with great ideas etc... who takes our ideas, doesn’t give credit and thus everyone else thinks they are amazing. I’d like to believe that sooner than later, karma will strike back.
Don’t know what they want, so they tell you what they think they want, then yell at you when you deliver it, because that’s not what they ACTUALLY want. Rinse, repeat.
Had a boss look at my boyfriend at the time (who was very fit) say in a drunken and lascivious moment ‘I just want to keep looking at him’. It was so uncomfortable for me and him
Our leadership team, who constantly badmouth each other the second one of them leaves the room, as if it should engender good feelings in us low-level people to see our leaders so eager to stab each other in the back. If you so clearly don’t trust each other, why the hell should we trust you?
Chuck mcbride.
The guy who was promoted to lead our collection of brands. Thought it would be a cool idea, instead of working hard and nailing our recently acquired digital, to convince client they should farm allllll of their brands digital out to a large digital-specific agency. He secretly made a deal with digital agency that he and three of his people were going to get cushy positions over there once the move went through.
Turns out the loss of a massive chunk of digital business meant layoffs on my team. Shocking. And in the end, the digital agency that was going to hire him said “Sorry buddy, we just don’t know if you’re the right fit.”
No shit. He’s the kind of dip that intentionally screws your business for his own gain the second you give him control.
With nowhere to go, he left the city.
Didn't know their shit. Just said yes to everything and dumped the follow up on the team. Constantly late for meetings (record was 2 hours late) in the middle of the work day and magically had last minute 'issues'. Never did any work, always came late and left early, happy to claim credit for everything.
Pretender. Did the old trick of describing what he wanted in as many words as possible without actually telling us what he wanted. Surrounded by good creatives so he hides amongst them and well respected by peers. Took the agency another 2 years to figure it out but glad for their sakes they did.
Micromanager and the one who's always right.
the infamous Duck Dodgers and the Pope
Others at her same level frequently refer to her as "useless". They're completely accurate.
worst boss ever was when I was client side in analytics. we were a small in the weeds kind of team. our VP was an ex-consultant who thought he knew everything, but had so little industry knowledge and NO technical chops - so he couldn’t do anything him self. we used to have pull and cut his data - I guess he was good at copying from excel and pasting into powerpoint.
actually, as I write this I’ve described two ex-bosses in analytics. it’s hard to garner respect in the field if you don’t have the skills.
Jeff Baxter sorry not sorry
Worst boss was at a consultancy. He won awards for 1 idea then used contacts to create his own thing. I never met him. Worked there for over 4 months. Overheard him asking my name 3 months in.
