It doesn't have to be either/or, but I'd be O.K. with sacrificing work/life balance for a pile of cash, or something the world actually values. For the thrill of saying I've created an "award winning, next level" pat on my back...nah.
I value a hug from my kid more than a metal lion head any day.
I hope one day we realize there is a way to have both a fulfilling career and a fulfilling personal life. Right now it seems like it's more acceptable to come in late and hungover than to take off at a reasonable hour to spend time with your family. Most executives gave up/ fucked up their lives and only have work to live for and don't seem to want to let anyone else get to the top unless they do the same. Working hard and being talented is not the same as choosing to put your career over a family. We need to believe you can be a great creative and still have a family/life. Don't celebrate the last one in the office. Take a closer look at how much time they waste or work.
100% prefer work life balance. Amazing life experiences, travel, family, and friends are worth more than all the advertiser circle-jerk awards in the world
Next level work with will organized managers and a team where everyone pulls their weight. While having a work life balance. It's not rocket science people, it's art, both should be possible.

Easy work. I put my creative juices toward my own projects.
Bounce back and forth between the two. Next level work burns you out. Projects at a place with good work/life balance aren't fulfilling enough.
Balance, hands down. Grinding for months on end and winning awards are not worth it when those hours could have been spent with family and friends, exercising, traveling, personal projects, being an interesting person with hobbies outside work.
In the grand scheme of things, whether you win a ton of awards or not, this industry will chew you up and spit you out when you're deemed to old. In that sense I'd rather enjoy my life than my work.

22-30 next level creative. 30+ I want balance. Hopefully I've kicked ass early in my career and can leverage that to find a place where at 30+ I can have both
Work/life balance
I used to always ask myself this. I was at a big agency with no work/life balance and thought I'd like a smaller shop instead. At the small shop now and realizing I prefer next level work because of the reward/fulfillment.
Do the work to get next level life... fuck balance.

@SAD1: You can get way more cash and tons of more hugs from your kid by doing pretty much anything other than advertising.
Or mediocre work with no life balance? lol
Seems like more creatives are ok with sacrificing work/life balance, while most of the account management and project management choose the opposite. I think this could be at the heart of a lot of creative vs account battles. Personally, I bounce between the two. Work hard, win awards, take big pay raise and travel the world, back to the grind a few years later.
@AD2: You've pretty much nailed it! In most shops, creatives leave after a year or two. Yet, at places the likes of Droga5, it's Account folks the ones who rotate more often.
