Would a firm or legal employer consider hiring a more senior candidate even if the positing is for a junior role? For example, if the position is for a mid-level associate, but someone with 15 years of experience who otherwise checks all necessary boxes applies for the role, would the employer consider the candidate for a counsel or partner role instead? Or are junior roles not worth applying to for senior level candidates?

My firm likely would not. Whether correct or not, we would assume you want more money than the position is paying. Also, given your years of experience we would also make assumptions about your willingness to work on assignments that are "beneath" you.

I can’t speak for law firms but we wouldn’t do it for in house. The issue is that we always thought a senior person is taking the position out of desperation and would leave at their first opportunity.

no, not usually

In general law firms will not do this unless you are switching practice areas

I have an offer for $130k for a senior attorney position in a boutique L&E firm. Also have a recruiter who thinks she can get me into another for $150-170k. Both are more than I’ve ever made (Denver, 17 yrs of experience but completely different practice areas). Any tips for countering the $130k offer for more using the other potential offer while not risking a complete withdrawal of the current offer? I’ve never been in a position to bargain my starting salary so this is all very new to me.

Any recommendations for finding the rare executive-level legal positions or for landing on the radar of the big executive search firms would be much appreciated!
