Why the fuck does this matter? People do what they want in life. I️ LOVE being a PM and it prepares me for so much more than just a career in “advertising”. SR is more consulting to be honest so maybe I️ have a very different perspective than a traditional agency. I’d laugh at seeing some creatives or developers try and coordinate multiple tracks of work and deal with clients like we do. Respect each other for what everyone brings to the table.
Producers? Hell no they throw great parties
l feel like AD1 has no idea what PMs do because I’ve never once at any agency ever seen a PM get any remote amount of credit for an idea. Hell, PMs usually aren’t even acknowledged on awards credits!
Also totally agree with everything AS1 said.
Producers & PMs are vastly different roles, so I wouldn't say that at all. Often the PM role seems like glorified babysitting, and it's pretty thankless. Producers on the other hand grind, but generally have a lot more perks, like travel and managing the production/vendor relationships (yes, I'm aware this can be thankless as well).
RGA is so producer run though.
I love a good producer, hate bad ones. They're super important and underappreciated, imo.
It is thankless work...let’s be real
yes
PMs are either the most incredibly helpful people or just serve to take up space in a room. no in between.
A good creative director is a godsend. But I know a lot of wack ones.
Nah, PM’s get all the perks of coming up with the idea without having to come up with the idea. Sure they do a ton of other stuff to make he idea happen, but that’s the perk.
None of you know that a pm is a producer, nomenclature my friends. Either way a thankless unappreciated job. Funny, agencies can’t live without them and a lot of account people are ignorant enough to treat them like traffic people.
Yeah, the interpretations of producer/pm on here are pretty funny. The whole internal versus external teams, or manages money and schedules versus logistical execution is very narrow and specific to some agencies. Some of us manage internal teams, external vendors, and clients simultaneously. The discipline of project management has technical roots, which is why you see the title a lot in IT departments, software and web development, and architecture firms. Traffic managers are a necessary role, but that’s not project management. At best, it’s a facet.
I love everyone.
Producers aren’t really producers though. They are project managers. Just a different title at RGA. Both jobs can be cool, providing you’re into it.
I love the problem solving part of it (teams, quality / time / budget) it's also a very varied, social job, and you can learn so much which is transferrable to running a business, and other industries. Pays great too for what can be a non taxing job at times.
I know I have a lot of respect from most colleagues because they request me on projects etc, But yeah some ppl don't appreciate or respect you... But those ppl don't respect anyone and are generally the vile individuals everyone wants kicked out when we trim teams during a financial squeeze. And guess who can help make that happen?
ED1 you stole the words right out of my mouth, that goes for account people too!
A good PM is a godsend. But I know a lot of wack ones.
