Would you take a lower salary for a job you enjoy more? I keep going back and forth on this because I want both. Some days peace feels more important and other days the money does. How do you weigh this.

I have before and I'd do it again, within reason. I would be willing to take a lower salary for a fully remote job, especially since being remote saves money. With inflation doing its thing though, I'm not in a comfortable position at the moment to take a pay cut without a money-saving benefit in return.

I agree. I’ve been working remote for 10 years and I don’t know what I would do if I had to drive back to work again! financially I wouldn’t be able to afford it.

Only once you have reached the point at which this is an option. Are you able to pay your bills? Do you have money to enjoy life? Can you afford a vacation? Are you saving? If the answer to any of these is no, then your answer needs to be no. How does retirement savings look? Also important.

As for me, Inhave a hard time making it paycheck to paycheck. No extra money for fun, no eating out, only cheap foods. Retirement seems highly unlikely. So no, I cannot take a pay cut for any reason.

I agree with every aspect of this post!

If I were in a truly toxic, weighing on my mental and physical health type of job, I’d definitely take the lower salary. Now, the position I’m in currently, the work is tolerable, but to say I enjoy it is a stretch. It wouldn’t make sense for me to take a cut.

I know someone who did this but they had already paid of most of there big things so they could afford to do so as they were older but majority of younger people can not afford to do this.

For peace and mental health? Yes 100%

I look at it a bit differently. Everything is quantifiable. Convenience, WFH, environment, etc. They are all worth something so don't throw them in as 0 sum. I take each aspect of a company, total comp, strength and cost of benefits, WFH, culture, environment, commute costs, taxes if crossing state lines, 401k match, etc and assign each a value. Not even a realistic value but how much I value that.

For example, WFH might save you $100 a month in commute costs and clothes, makeup, whatever. But i would say for my preference and piece of mind and how i "want" to work it is worth way more so i might give WFH $500 a month in value or more. Once you do that for both companies, you can compare apples to apples. Don't be hypnotized by the allure of the larger number. Intangibles add up and the comparison may surprise you in the end.

I wouldn’t personally. I would tough it out even if I hated my job because I have bills and kids that depend on me.

This track usually leads to director of revenue. Offer 2 - internal audit staff so SOX and compliance projects.
