Absolutely, and without hesitation. Defense is one of those things we just need to have, and have needed since time immemorial. I made peace with the nuance surrounding the necessity of certain occupations a long time ago. Circa 2008 to be exact.
Absolutely! Helping to bolster our country's strength to foster and maintain peace in the world, and strengthen our ideology and way of life, is something any American should be proud to do!
That's something I think about a lot. I've gone all over with that in my head over time. I used to think I'd never do it, but now I could see how defense jobs are necessary. And, as it happens, it's not a question I've had to answer. Some things I've worked on could potentially have military application, but I've never had to decide whether I'd work on something like a weapons system.
Absolutely what the government does is none of my concern unless it affects my money.
Why go overseas and make the same as I am right now? It does not make financial sense. If I'm going to take that kind of risk, there is going to have to be a reward. You don't go over there for the health benefits.
You got me there. Didn't think about defense contractors working CONUS. When I took my contract it was OCOUNS so that is what I associate defense contracts with. You make a good point.
yes
Yes
Yes
I would, as long as my work was not directly related to wealons I feel are unethical. My uncle worked for Honeywell as a computer engineer during the Vietnam War and it didnt bother him that a different division of the company manufactured controversial anti-personnel cluster bombs, weapons that were outlawed by many countries as inhumane.
i have more moral qualms than my uncle. i would think twice before working for a company like that. No amount of money will entice me to design germ warfare weapons or war gasses.
Rising Star
What an interesting back story! I’m sure he has a lot of interesting anecdotes from that time
Yes. Of course, I will prefer to work in Defence related company as I m having the same background
No. Defense company is more critical to work unlike my current company.
I will always avoid the military-industrial complex after watching my father devote his life to it. Better to work in private enterprise if at all possible.
I believe that the souls of the deceased ones, victims of these creations, would haunt the individual at night. In their dreams (or nightmares, better saying) they will show vividly all the crimes they are responsible for. Just search for the Winchester Mystery House. Is it true or madness? Does it matter, anyway?
Absolutely. Actually I will in the near future would want to work on making defense equipment
This is tough. The short answer is, no. You’d have to pay me a lot more to do so. The long answer is that I don’t think working in a field you disagree with inherently immoral, especially if it’s what puts food in your kids’ mouths. You gotta do what you gotta do to care for your family.
I would be happy to work in a new industry, but after 21 years I think it would be hard to convince recruiters. I tried after 5 years and got 0 invites.
Oooh, what a great question. I would want to work for a place where I felt proud to make a contribution.
This question has kept me up at night throughout my time in college, obtaining my degree. Originally, I told myself I wanted nothing to do with weapons. I came from poverty, and seeing people kill other people for such obtuse reasons made me never want to go into defense work. I didn't want to be responsible for the senseless death of anyone. I got into engineering solely for space exploration and advancing humans deeper into space.
However, having now finished my degree and having been educated on so much more through classes like history, government, anthropology, and even art history, I have started to waver a bit and have applied to defense companies. While I definitely don't agree with all of the history of the United States, there is something to be said about the life you can live freely here. That to me is worth protecting, especially for all the people that rely on that protection and all of the future people that will as well. Ultimately, just having the freedom to choose is worth protecting!
It's not exactly the same thing but I WOULD enthusiastically work on tech related to peaceful space exploration (or probably also tech related to commercial space travel). So maybe satellites, rockets, etc.
