Absolutely, and without hesitation. Defense is one of those things we just need to have, and have needed since time immemorial. I made peace with the nuance surrounding the necessity of certain occupations a long time ago. Circa 2008 to be exact.
Absolutely! Helping to bolster our country's strength to foster and maintain peace in the world, and strengthen our ideology and way of life, is something any American should be proud to do!
Nah I’m not a sellout
Anyone who struggles with this question can just leave the country. GOOD BYE. I'm not saying everything the defense department has ever done has been morally or ethically correct; of course there have been heinous lapses of judgement many times throughout the US's history. But by and large, the "Defense" Department is for...you know...DEFENDING OURSELVES. What in heaven's name is wrong with that? You (and that goes for every single American reading this message) would not have half of the rights and freedoms you do now if it were not for our second-to-none Defense Department. Understand, I'm a person who thinks we have WAY too much government generally, and who thinks the government needs to stay the heck out of our lives, and stop stealing our hard-earned money for a great many of their programs. But defending ourselves against those who would want to kill us, or enslave us, or take our land, is not only morally and ethically spotless, but is also one of the absolutely essential uses of our tax dollars and purposes for government to even exist at all. If we don't have the ability to defend ourselves against any and all foes, then we're essentially handing the keys of our house over to the enemy and telling them to have their way with us. This is still the freest nation on earth that allows people more than any other nation to pursue their dreams unencumbered (notice I said "pursue" their dreams, not "hand them" their dreams), and this is still the land that millions of people are desparately trying to come to from countless other nations. THIS is a place that MUST be defended, or it will cease to exist. And if you can't see that, please move to some other country that you believe is better for you. We may miss you, but we won't miss you much.
How does choosing to or not to work in the defense industry have anything to do with this?
I made that decision almost 13 years ago and I did think a lot about it before I made it official. What ultimately won me over was the mission and battle space of the technology I have worked on all these years. Namely: targeting and destroying mid to long range ICBMs. There is a different feel to working on technology that is meant to destroy non-human threats instead of human ones.

Clever that you were able to hone into a goal that still aligned within the bounds of your moral goalposts!
I would not do it morally and I am surprised by the comments

There are a broad range of opinions on this topic based on their life experiences and the experiences of their parents. My wife’s parents fled Iran during the Iran Iraq war so sure, they want nothing to do with it.
In the current world state, no.
I would say you drank the other Kool-Aid.
Why is the doomsday clock closer to midnight than it's ever been?
One doesn't simple take and keep Gaza peacefully; this territory has been disputes for millenia.
Trump, the American president is floating taking over Panama, Canada and Greenland, in addition to Gaza.
That kind of empire building and what Russia is clearly intent on at Ukrane's expense doesn't happen peacefully against happy and successful sovereign nations. North Korea even joined in on the Russian fight.
China has been making plays at taking over Tawain.
On a micro scale, America is relatively peaceful for now, if you're part of select classes, but the world is a powder keg, and none of the above has anything to do with "drinking the Kool-Aid" like your demi-gods say I am.
A tide is clearly turning and it's the wake that concerns me.
I live near a military base with lots of research and defense engineering opportunities, and I never would. It doesn't matter which administration is in power. I would rather take the 30% less on average so I can sleep at night and maintain my ethics.

I respect your opinion ME2! It’s a difficult dilemma for sure
Anyone who objects doesn’t deserve the freedom our military provides them
I would argue our military provides us the freedom to choose unlike other nations.
I would prefer to work for a defense company, and I have for the past 20+ years. It gives me great satisfaction to play a small part in contributing to our nation's war fighters. There are few other industries that could provide me as much satisfaction and purpose.

That’s awesome! When Palmer Luckey made the switch into defense there were many in the software world that weren’t able to make the mental switch to this perspective. I know most can’t. I to see it as protecting our freedom
Although I have never worked in the defense industry, I have no moral/ethical objection to doing so.
Having worked as an Engineer in Defence for the last 28 years I would have to say yes.
The time is right for a new role, but I would have no qualms about it being in the civilIan defence sector.
I started my career serving on a nuclear fast attack submarine and put it all on the line to protect Americans (even the ones who despise us). Now I help design submarines and I'm honored to still serve America in a different capacity. I love our country and love to love what I do. Some of the comments here are pathetically selfish.
I'd rather work for them than big pharma. At least they're honest about killing people.
If it was closer to home,I would.
i would work for defense contractor. pay me going rate, plus time added to my military retirement.
no thanks. for all my faults, the least i can say is im not some sleazebag MIC dog.
Depending on where it is, and how far I have to travel. I would.
I already do and while I understand what the weapons/weapons systems can do, I also understand that enemies to the United States also have weapons systems with the same capabilities. Unfortunately, this industry fulfills a necessary evil and I take honor and pride in aiding in the protection and mission success of our warfighters.... It is my personal way of thanking them all for their service.
Weapons do not have to be used as weapons. They can be used as deterrents. Building weapons is a must. Our defense, our protection, and aide in defense of our allies is crucial at this point in history. Probably more so than any other time in history. Morally, ethically, weapons are wrong. The problem isn't the weapon. The problem is humanity can rarely see eye to eye on anything, especially when it isn't their lives at stake. Just words for thought. No harshness meant nor expressed.

Right! I agree. And I’m sure many disagree with the use of there deterrent. But the act of having it is valuable.
