Sigh. No work for two months. Let go because of GC delays. Forced out of the US. No severance pay, no relocation, maxed all my credit cards. Haven’t been able to pay all my bills. Flights cancelled left and right. Zero leads on work applied. Freeze hires everywhere, including Asia (where I am from). Totalled my car. Had a mental breakdown in March. 2020 just keeps getting better and better. Anyone just tired of existing/ 2020 to blow over? I feel like on autopilot these days.

It’s amazing to me that it’s a running joke in the legal community that typos magically appear in pleadings the minute after they’re submitted, and yet associates are made to feel like shit when there’s the smallest of errors or mistakes in documents.

and then. After I send it. I find a typo. Ugh.

I'm a 1st year @ a civil lit defense firm. I summered here and got the "our firm culture is amazing, we want to grow and help you learn" pitch and accepted the offer of $75k, thinking that was what most other associates make (I'm 1st gen). But today I found out that associates with 4yrs experience are making $80k; for hitting the 1950 billable req., the bonus is $1k. I've also found there are big DEI problems that I can't overlook. It feels like the pitch was a big lie. Advice?

Just graduated law school with honors but don’t have a job lined up. I’m thinking about just going solo and starting my own firm after taking the bar in Sept. Finances are not a problem. Planning to practice IP transactions/prosecution/litigation. I have work exp/clerk/extern but no associate exp. This climate is crazy and I think I can grab a lot of smaller work myself through my own networks and be my own boss. Also currently grabbing an mba part time. Thoughts? Advice?

A lot of people complain about millennials but a Gen Z clerk just told me that she wasn’t going to download some documents from a deal site because they were so many (and she had to download one document at a time) and I should review them directly on the site.

Mexican attorney here - I am currently researching LLM programs (specifically M&A) and somehow paying USD$200K to study in the US doesn’t seem too appealing.

I hold a Spanish passport which may help with tuition fees in European Universities - do you recommend any European LLM programs or should I just bite the bullet and ask for a loan and pay the USD$150 - 200K?

Mentioning the programs is greatly appreciated.

So, I hate my job. For years I’ve been trying to work through nitty gritty and minutiae in the hopes that sorting out those details would “fix” my dissatisfaction. I’ve switched jobs a few times and dabbled in a few practice areas. But I’ve realized I just hate practicing law. Is there any reason to tell your boss or supervisor that you’re miserable? My assumption is no. They won’t fix things. So why would you? Any reason I should reconsider? (P.S. looking for an exit, but that’s not settled.)

I am an incoming associate (awaiting bar results). I have already begun working as a law clerk and am already being given plenty of tasks to fill my time, which I’m grateful for. I am also fortunate to be in working in an area of the law that is personally fulfilling to me, so a lot of the work I do doesn’t feel like work. Here’s the thing: I do my absolute best. I give polished, clean work, and I always give my personal best. However, it seems like a lot of the tasks I do always get sent back..
