Got the call for this piece yesterday.
Thoughts on a Omega De Ville Prestige as a first luxury watch? Would be ~$7.5K USD at retail. Some friends have said great things about Omega as a starter, whereas others say it’s not worth it over a Rolex Oyster Perpetual (which would be similar in cost).
I personally love how clean the design is, the use of gold, and the thinner band as it links the watch … find the Rolex band design to be too chunky.

Seiko and Hamilton are your best bets for affordable but high quality. Some specific watches I like: Sarb 033/035 and Cocktail Time for Seiko, Jazzmaster and Khaki Field for Hamilton
+1 on Hamilton Khaki Field (and Seikos). Won’t wow anyone, but watch guys that really know watches will respect them.

There’s definitely a lot of options and use cases, but one recommendation I’d make for an all around everyday watch would be the Tissot Gentleman. Right between the range at $775

Check out the original SARB017 Alpinist, really cool watch, it’s the one the SPB157 is based on. Not made anymore so you need to buy secondhand, but I think it’s cooler.
If automatic, Seiko/Tissot/maybe a Baume & Mercier?
If you want a brand name, you’ll need to go quartz and that’s a TAG F1. Good watch too.

While I dig Seiko and Hamilton, I’m of the opinion that for non dress watches you get more bang for the buck from microbrands.
My two favorites are NTH and Zelos.
NTH mil subs are amazing watches with the perfect case for average wrists. They’re vintage inspired designs but free of any fauxtina which I think is tacky as hell. Basically like if you were buying a new, vintage watch.
Zelos has a lot of cool original designs, and makes in batches that typically sell out fast. You want to get on their FB page or mailing list to know when stuff is being released. The Mako, Horizons, and Swordfish are all popular options.
Lorier makes a lot of cool watches at good prices.
I believe Halios has stock again and they are great watches. Real cult following because of the high quality.
All of the micros I recommend have a robust second hand market so no worries about losing money. In fact I recommend buying second hand for most of them if the prices haven’t been bid up. That happened for Halios, for a while they were trading almost 2x original list price, but that’s come down.
If you want a dress watch there aren’t a ton of micro options. The visitor Linden is really cool, almost pulled the trigger twice on that one. The Vario Empire is also cool.
My dress watch is actually a Seiko SARB065, really cool watch. The new Presage cocktail time they replaced it with is also cool, not as nice a movement or finishing but it’s a tad thinner, but both are thick for dress watches.
