Good for you. Too many diverse people are taken advantage of while their non-diverse colleagues simply get to focus on their jobs.
Good for you. If they want you to participate in those committees, they need to count those hours toward your billable requirement. I don’t do anything more than what the firm will compensate for me. You can mentor through your alumni association at your own pace.
Ew you don’t get billable hour credit for your committee work? Shame on your firm.
Nope it's all "a wonderful opportunity to foster firm citizenship" 🙄
Eh do you, but I enjoy mentoring and recruiting people that look like me. Can definitely see how it can overextend someone if you’re on 6, but I do think it’s important to help be the change you want in the world and remain involved in some capacity.
I quit all the commitments that were requested by the firm bc of my identity (DEI committee, recruiting committee, LGBTQ+ committee, women's leadership, etc). On top of that I was also meeting with 1-2 law students a week, a commitment that I plan to continue bc it's something I choose to do and something that I actually find fulfilling and rewarding. I'm just tired of being the token who gets asked to so all this extra nonbillable work for no additional pay.
Firms will exploit you if you let them get away with it. Do what’s best for you!
Same here. We have billable hour credit for that but when compensation season came around, they made it very clear that they were only looking at client billables and I totally got screwed. After that, I dropped all the DEI citizenship stuff. The irony is that when white women do it, they’re praised and promoted for it. If you want to take advantage of my identity, then you need to pay me for it. For now, I do only things that actually promote diversity in my practice - mentor POC, staff them on my challenging work, cross sell them to clients and partners. No more time wasting admin work for me.
I honestly don’t do shit at my firm besides billing - I’ll have an informational interview w a POC should they email me now and again but apart from that, I’m billing and going home. I see us getting taken advantage of way too frequently to participate. Good for you.
Same
I actively participate to effectuate change.
