4th year here. Every year getting good reviews but i have only met the target billable once and not on track to meet it this year again. I suspect others in my group are meeting it. I am not the go-to favorite of any partner except one, but his deals are smaller and does not give the constant hours needed to reach the billable. At this point, should i assume it will be hard for me to be counsel here, and lateral for a better chance to be counsel in a new firm?

Good reviews doesn’t mean much if you’re not meeting hours and billing lower than typical for your peer group.

I don’t know your firm or practice area, but, tbh, I’m surprised you are still employed not hitting hours 3/4 years if the rest of the group is hitting. Unless the group as a whole is profitable so there’s no pressure to trim and/or you fill some niche.

This was me, good reviews and okish hours that were below target. Then I got a surprise uncorroborated negative review that was never mentioned before and soon shown the door.

Yes. Don’t DM me, I am not saying this be self serving.

Yes. Sounds like it will be hard for you to make even senior associate if you're consistently not making hours while your peers are.

Thing is - do you really not know what you’re doing or does it just feel like it? Meaning are you just being given more substantive work that’s an adjustment or do you feel like you’re behind all your classmates?

Serious billing question - if during the course of the day, you first receive an email from Client A at say 11:10am and you read it, you then respond to it at 12:20pm. You get another email at 2pm from Client A and respond immediately. The next email comes in at 4pm, you read it and respond only at 4:30pm. None of the email responses take more than 3-5mins. You are working on matters for other clients at all other times during the day. How much are you billing for Client A?

Let’s talk speed reading. I’m a slow reader and listened to a podcast recently on speed reading. I’m intrigued. Who here speed reads? How did you learn those skills, and what types of documents do you speed read in practice? To those at V25 firms, how do you view your London office in terms of the quality of work we get and overall importance to the firm? Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me. Should I be concerned (I.e., will this reflect poorly on me, come review time? Will I have dug myself too much of a hole if I keep burning my non-billable hours?) But now, one partner has become super mad and when I explained ADD, he said:
