4th yr assoc., just lateraled from a small, ID firm and start soon with a large firm doing ID for the most part. My old firm allowed me to do substantive work—depos, hearings, interface directly with clients, etc.
I have no idea what I’ll be doing at the new place, day to day. I know I won’t have as much freedom to do the substantive work and I understand why, but I also hope I won’t be relegated to grunt work, constant doc review, etc. id appreciate insight on associate work at large firms!

I had more opportunities at a larger ID firm after coming from a smaller ID firm. There was more work coming into the larger firm so there were more opportunities and resources for associates.

ID is ID. You will probably get the same amount of experience, if not more, at the larger firm

I work at a large firm, that has a heavy ID docket and the associates all handle all those things you are used to doing previously.

Which office?

Sounds like a question you should’ve asked when you were interviewing. It’s a little late now, but I’d reach out to other associates your year level at the firm.

No I agree, I should’ve asked then. But tbh, I was going to take the job regardless; it was an offer nearly double my current pay lol thanks for the tip!

You’re spot on OP, you’ll likely have less autonomy over your cases at the larger firm unless you become a partner like me.

I'm in finance/tech FPA, looking to go back to the defense industry for a 25% increase in TC. But wanted to see if I should leverage the new salary with current company to see if they'll match.

Background: got a promotion at current company that didn't come with sufficient increase . After stating my case I was told it would be evaluated next October, which is what prompted the initial job search.

Current TC 103K [88/15], offer 125k base [+discretionary bonus].

Does anyone work at a firm where legal assistants don't do legal assistant things? For example, I have to do my scheduling and calendaring. I have to upload documents to our file management system. This morning, a name partners assistant didn't realize the name partner had a depo and didn't confirm it. This is how this firm as been for decades and it's incredibly frustrating to work this way. It's so hard to not stress over this daily.

I work for a small firm (about 20 attorneys) and make 90k. I’m coming up for a raise discussion in a couple of months but don’t know how to go about it/what is reasonable to ask for. I bill about 35 hrs/week at 400/hr, so I think I deserve a bump, especially considering the posture of the market. Any advice/feedback from similarly situated associates or partners at similarly sized firms?

Advice: my firm incentivized associates to get licensed in fed courts - 4 fed courts for a 5k raise. They also covered the admission fee. I just accepted an offer with another firm and will be putting in my 2 weeks notice tomorrow. Is it wrong to submit an expense report for the charges I incurred related to the fed court admission fees? I didn’t plan on moving to another firm; the new firm sought me out and made me an offer - the process happened so fast. I want to be professional about this.

When drafting a brief or other submissions for court or arbitration, do you use words such as clearly, erroneously, etc. to emphasize certain points? Our managing partner says that we should, but all of the writing guides for litigators that I've read repeats the mantra "show, don't tell" and explain that most judges dread such words.

I know that the politically correct thing to do here is to do whatever the managing partner wants me to do, but I just wanted to ask for other ppl's opinion.

Thoughts on whether to bring this up or continue to be a team player until I burn out and pay off my student loans?
