Heyy fellow art teacher over here! Congratulations! My best advice is to take care of yourself throughout the year, learn to be okay with things not going perfectly, write down right now all the reasons you want to be a teacher so that you can look at your list when you're feeling disheartened in the middle of the year. You've got it, it's gonna be great!
Take time to put systems in place especially related to respecting the supplies and materials and cleaning up. It will benefit you during your entire career. Have kids help with setting up and distributing materials.
In addition, find out district guidelines for getting supplies and equipment. You might want to use GoFundMe or write grants
Just some practical middle school advice:
- always have at least one “sponge activity” ready for kids who finish the daily work quickly
- make it quick/easy for kids to access needed supplies, but keep other supplies out of sight and mind
- make it routine for the kids to take responsibility for clean up
- give as much student choice as possible when planning activities so they can better connect
- consistently stick to your rules and procedures - give an inch, and they’ll take a mile
- be yourself and enjoy the middle school weirdness!

Congratulations on landing your dream job! Sounds like you are ahead of the game.
Congratulations! That sounds great. I would suggest just trying to relax and get used to the new routines. Don't be afraid to ask questions of the other teachers and administrators. And have a sense of humor if things don't go great. Enjoy what you're doing, you can inspire some kids and maybe make a difference in their lives. Art matters!
Be prepared and patient.
Core teachers and admin frequently don't understand (and sometimes don't try to understand) specials curriculum or content needs.
This can particularly be true in district offered PD. It might also come up in the scheduling of events like state testing, field trips, etc
It can even come up in scheduling classes. I have a good friend who had kids put in Art 2 before having Art 1 because it worked for their schedule.
Welcome to Middle School. The teachers are hands down the craziest, most creative staff I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with. While I don’t teach art, a few pieces of advice for a “newbie” would be:
1. Be kind to the kids. Sometimes it can be hard with this age group, but they want you to like them, bad.
2. Set up your room using bins and label everything so it’s clear to the kids where to return materials.
3. I loved art even though I was terrible at it. Encourage everyone to always try. My art teacher always said I was so creative. He gave me the joy of creativity even though I was not his best art student.
4. Have clear and consistent rules and follow them even if it kills you. If you’re not consistent, the kids will walk all over you.
5. It’s ok not to have all the answers.
6. Approach each day with a “clean slate.” Do this with you students as well.
7. Ask (via email) if any of the regular Ed teachers want to do an extended art project with an assignment from their subject area. My art teacher had students create paper mache heads of one of the characters from a novel I do. They could pick the one they wanted to do.
8. Get to know other teachers. Ask questions. They will be more than happy to help you.
9. Make sure the kids always clean up after themselves.
10. Display student work throughout the building, not just near your room. Ask kids to help!
11. Enjoy the kids who are different.
12. Have fun and smile everyday.
13. Be a good listener.
14. We’ve all been where you are. You have nothing to prove. Accept suggestions and constructive criticism/concerns.
15. Good luck to you. I’m so happy you landed your dream job. Know that while some days won’t seem like a dream, you’ll look back on your career and know you touch many lives! ❤️❤️
Always have a lesson plan, and always have a backup when the first one crashes and burns, and have a third idea if the second one proves undoable. You’ll get used to it! 😂
Also…
* Every day is different.
* Embrace the chaos.
* Kids will test you.
* Stay steady and consistent.
* If one day a kid is angry and snaps at you, don’t jump to taking it personally—90% of the time it’s not you.
* The angrier or more upset you are, the quieter you speak. Yell and they’ll push your buttons to get you to snap again and again.
* If you say you’re going to do something, do it or you’ll lose their trust. (Sometimes, learn to say, “I’ll do my best.”)
* Be truthful. Kids can hear a lie a mile away.
There’s more, but you’ll forget all of this advice in the heat of the moment and learn by experience anyway! 😁
NMS1, I agree with your post. We need to be their mentors. It is just weird when teachers let glstudebts get by with aĺ kinds of things because they want to be friends with their students.
Our Art teacher has a blast in his classroom, and he is developing some amazing artists. Congratulations! I hope your first year is exciting and filled with great memories.
They will be so creative lead and you will see how creative these students are. As a Substitute teacher Art teachers I have seen so many students who are very talented and creative they don’t always follow just as you ask but they love to create.
It amazes me how awesome some of our Middle Schoolers are at Art. The projects they show me are incredible and very well done. Our art teacher has a trophy wall where he displays some of the artwork students have created.
Congratulations!
Set ground rules from the beginning and stick to them. Too hard to back track and middle schoolers will test the boundaries every single day.
This is so true. Of course, for the most part, Middle School may be challenging, but the connection is important. Don't worry about being their best friend-focus on being someone they can trust and depend in. CONSISTENCY!!!
