I think it’s pretty real, even though in house jobs can get busy. It depends on staffing, resources and industry. I notice it now that my peers are partners and spend a lot of time traveling, doing evening events, pitches for client development.
Yes, it seems the roles are all different
For me it’s been legit. I’ve been in house almost 3 years at two companies and I’ve only very rarely worked outside of business hours. Only a few things on weekends that were specific events I had to monitor, not so much work I had to get done. I also work out most days during business hours or go to church; today I’m going to confession at 12:30pm and just blocked my calendar.
I should add that I came from midlaw and got a pay bump actually - TC is $232k base with 25% bonus.
How long were you in midlaw before transitioning to in-house? Love that your experience seems all around positive!
It’s legit. Base comp is $305K plus bonus plus stock. In-house is busy and it’s more than just the legal analysis; it’s about being strategic thinking. I work for a global company and have early meetings with Europe and sometimes late calls with Asia but I have flexibility with my schedule during the day and rarely work late or weekends.
Yes obsession with money is definitely unusual for partners…
Going in house even at $400k would be a close to 50% pay cut for me. So I am staying out. And I work like 45-50 hours a week so unless In house work is 25 hours a week it makes no sense in terms of hours either…
C1 What practice group are you in?
I’d say overall it’s still real. I’ve had 3 in-house gigs so far and each one is less work than my BigLaw days.
