A dumb question but is there any job adjacent to consulting that is more intellectual? Assuming all the firms are relatively “fratty” but curious if it exists anywhere. Maybe in tech? Or only academia.

Perhaps a think tank or some sort of research institute.

Yeah, I imagine MITRE might fit the description of what OP is looking for.

Sure, there are plenty of small econ, eng, software, etc shops that are mostly staffed with people who know that domain extremely well. Do you have one of those skill sets, or are you just looking for a less fratty version of Deloitte?

likehelpful

Advanced degrees will give you little - you need substantial years of experience in the field to be relevant as an expert.

"Fratty"?

Business/corporate world is about generating value for shareholders. If you want “intellectual”, go into academia, research, or some sort of content creation

Economic consulting is more intellectual, in a legally annoying way. But you’d better have your PhD if you want to make that pivot.

Got it… You don’t like collaborating or working with people.

Academia is probably best bet.

No, just cause you have an intellectual culture doesn’t mean there’s no collaboration. It’s unrelated.

I spent over 10 years in academia (STEM, top institutions), then worked at McK (leaving now), and let me tell you - there are no jobs that challenge you more intellectually on all fronts than driving your own business, especially one that you start as a solo founder and where you use cutting-edge tech, build both software and hardware, etc etc. It's a wild ride!

I left academia because of reasons 💸 but also because I was bored out of my mind. And it never occurred to me to consider consulting an intellectual profession. I make it intellectual myself because I get to build things and get creative with AI, but c'mon 🥲
