[query] Is it a good idea to say a firm No due to medical reasons to a new night shift project I'm hired in?Accenture
I recently got a night shift project (2 days ago) that requires me to work from 10:30pm till 7:30am
I'm not comfortable with these timings and I'm thinking to ask my manager to put me on Bench (Due to medical reasons that involve mental health)
Is it a nice idea to say a firm No to a new project I'm hardlocked into, due to night shifts?

Yes. I gave 12 years, not 20, and left after 4 years in the partnership. My new firm is well run, and has transparent management and leadership who deliver constant, meaningful communication. Instead of slaving for 75-80+ year old partners who actually think people hire me because of their name and don't themselves actually do any billable work, I'm now with mostly young hard working, entrepreneurial partners, who make cross-selling a priority and are always looking to grow the pie so there is more for the firm - not just themselves. Probably the most important difference is the improvement in my day-to-day mood, now that no I longer have to carry the mental burden of working to support a firm that I know is failing, and will soon die, due to negligent and myopic management.
Go. Don't look back.
Needed this. Thank you for your perspective. I have to check my own perspective sometimes - I was “raised” in my practice to believe that I “need” the old guard, and I’m nothing without them. Logically, I know that is not right, but it is not easy to de-program all the years of brainwashing. (Btw - I realize I am whining and appreciate the support.)
Good on you for taking the difficult step to move on. If you are at a firm where those in their late 60s/70s/80s in control don’t recognize the need for those of us in our 40s/50s to realize our leadership potential - you have no choice but to move or be passed over entirely.
Thank you for this!
Good! That’s why a mandatory retirement age is important. Start your own practice. Let his fail.
Been there. 12 years later all good!
