Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

First of all, no professional business would ever ghost someone they were ready to offer them the job.
Secondly, I don't know any high-cost living area where you could even make ends meet on $55K. $75-100K for a single individual would be more comfortable.
Third, what kind of full-time job these days would offer no benefits? That's pretty standard.
And lastly, for 10 years of experience, I would expect to be paid well into the upper-middle-class range at the bare minimum.
It's a contract job so no benefits which is why I asked for $4 more to cover a marketplace health plan for the new year.
The fact that they were offering such a lowball salary without benefits in a HCOL for a 10+ YOE candidate is indicative enough of their compensation strategy. You wouldn’t have liked working for them either. Can you imagine the company culture and the toxicity among the underpaid and probably overworked staff? Because I’ve worked for a company like that in a HCOL fresh out of college, and let me tell you, NO human being should ever have to experience that. Period.
I have a graduate degree and it’s the same dynamic here also. They like to stick to the bottom of the pay ranges for most positions. Also, the recession storyline has gotten old, they’ve been using it since 2022 and it’s been 3 years of slow hiring, but not a recession based on their yearly earnings. I think they anticipate more AI replacement and they keep outsourcing certain functions, then use “recession” as a justification. If it were a recession their balance sheets would look very different, they’re just methodically hiring less domestic employees.
Ghosting always sucks, but this honestly sounds like a blessing in disguise. $55k in HCOL is nothing. No benefits is ridiculous, and even more so on that salary. You should be getting so much more than that with your experience.
It's poverty wages lol but without a degree, the climate has been outright hostile. 2 years ago in my healthcare job the doctors knew less than I did about various conditions. Most doctors complain about not having trained staff and they look for credentials so if you find competent staff, keep them and pay them! Employers say the right things, we don't need credntials we want experience and soft skills but here I am willing to take minimum wage and I am still ghosted. My career coach told me he was shocked by my interview skills and cover letter and I thinki its because for lack of a better word, I'm low rent. There is still some bias when it comes to immigrants or those without a formal credential.
No benefits are criminal on that salary. I’ve had lower salaries, but the benefits outweighed that. Lose-lose situation.
It was a $**** show. I didn't even realize companies didn't offer benefits so why would I ask? Seems you can take no obvious or simple question for granted lol. So when the final email came through it didn't list benefits. I then sent a very polite email asking if there was room to negotiate a $2 differential for health care costs and I knew the second I sent the email that I had lost the job.
To be honest, 55k is shit. Don’t worry , you will get something better!

It's literal poverty, shit pay would be $65k a year, $55k is another level of oppression. The problem is that 50% of all jobs in my large city still pay $20 an hour or under. Someone with a PHD who was downsized in the government purge interviewed with me for a position paying $15 an hour. So I never lose sight of the value of a dollar but damn, I have to eat.
