A recruiter recently dangled a “dream firm” in front of me. Prestigious name, high-profile clients, corner-office energy, all that. But the pay cut was $30K and the hours sounded brutal. It’s funny how prestige is marketed like a luxury brand... you’re supposed to feel lucky to pay them in time and stress for the privilege of the name. Meanwhile, my current firm actually respects weekends, but no one outside knows who we are. Would you take the hit for the brand name? Is it ever worth it?

Take the paycheck and your sanity; no one cares what firm name’s on your résumé after year five.

If they pay less they are less prestigious…

like

How can they be more prestigious and pay less? Don’t all prestigious law firms pay market?

like

If there's a pay cut, it's not that prestigious. All prestigious firms are paying top of the market, and some pay above market bonuses. Are the hours brutal? Yes. Is it worth it? Depends on what your goals are. What you described sounds like a firm with nonsensical perks and not enough pay. Save your sanity and your pockets.

like

What are your goals? If partnership, your current firm will all else equal be more viable for that path, but it will ofc depend on your circumstances and relationships/status with the other partners and decision makers.

If your ultimate goal is in-house, all things equal the more prestigious firm is better, but again depends on the specifics and e.g. which shop works with better clients (and/or ones you’re more likely to want to work in-house for).

Increasingly the best firms are lateral hiring partners with existing books from firms they would have historically deemed as “lesser”. Cravath used to pride themselves on never hiring lateral partners and, well, look at them now lol.

SSYS would be a 6x return just to get back to ATH, and has been flat for 5 years. It’s currently at the low end of that range. That tells me that the risk is low compared to the potential/likely reward over enough time. Using this kind of strategy was successful for me with crypto. What do folks think here?

A friend was rewatching old episodes of Suits, which admittedly I’ve never seen. The main character starts at this law firm where associates are given cubicles not offices. There’s no way that’s accurate, right??? I have a cube but I’m just a lowly gov atty frm a state school LOL not a Harvard law alum at a reputable NYC firm

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.

Other than partner track, salary/benefits, and switching from coverage to general comm lit, what qualities of the move should I be thinking about as I weigh my options? Negotiating a settlement. I’m at $10k, opposing counsel is at $20k. My client won’t go higher than $15k. OC has come down to 17.5k and says his client won’t budge from that. Do I offer 12.5k so we can hopefully meet in the middle at 15k? Is that how the settlement game is played? Seems dumb we can’t just say let’s meet in the middle now and be done with this. (I’m a first year, first time negotiating a settlement on my own and I don’t want to screw this up!)

If you use the pomodoro method for time focus and tracking, do you bill in those increments or just keep your billablr timer going the whole time? For example, I work in 25 minute increments for large projects then I get a break. Do I bill .5 for that increment and restart my billing or keep my billing continuously going thereby not rounding up for those 5 min? I have just kept my timer going.
