Are you used to getting things done? Get used to the opposite of that. Also, all your friends will be disappointed in you.
Not hard, but as someone in a similar spot, I’m concerned it’s a one way trip. Pharma agencies will hire from general, not the other way around. They (pharma) groom legal-ease and regulatory constraints, not creativity.
I see as usual those who've never worked a day in the category (which is huge and can include lots of different things) are clamoring to "answer" first 😁 OP, too many unknowns including what it is that you do but yes, apply and explore, you don't have to accept an offer. Plus come to our bowl for more friendly and informative answers.
I broke into pharma with no previous experience, though I don't work on creative I find the problems we solve to be challenging and rewarding. I've talked to patients whose lives have literally been improved by our work. In strategy I think varried background and experience is of huge value. Look at the shop, the client and the disease state - maybe it's a great move. Depending on the role I look for outsiders, stay in pharma too long and you start to think the same way. Fresh perspectives are always needed.
Yeah, is it a one way trip? Talking to a recruiter, afraid I'm killing my career if I go pharma
They’d be thrilled to have you. But I stayed in pharma too long and it was really hard to get out. You probably won’t get any work for your portfolio while you’re there.
Wow. I never thought I’d ever hear the phrase “break into pharma.” Just shows you how sad the industry has become
Depends on the role. Media? Easy. Creative? Medium. Strategy is probably the hardest.
Would be account/client leadership. Yeah, definitely an angle of selling your soul. But the $$? That’s security.
Account is prob the easiest to hire with no pharma experience. And yes you will have to check your soul at the door. Agree with everything AD2 says, the work can be rewarding
So easy.
They love account leaders from general consumer. Many of the Marketing leads on the client side have filled those roles coming right from CPG. You’ll bond right off. Ignore all the other discussions about the creative and the chains. Is the general world of advertising such a paradise? Was it ever? It was for me, but that world has been gone for at least a decade
On the account side there's no difference. Your skills will transfer and you'll need them. Anyone can learn the rules/regs.
Do not worry, I have seen plenty of successful people who came to pharma at mid -to - senior level. Managing clients needs the same set of skills no matter what brand it is, and as someone else said, you can learn the rules and regs and all that. Welcome aboard!
Interesting (and helpful) food for thought. Thanks y’all.
