I actually was in your exact spot. I transitioned from recruiting to L&D 6 years ago. I started off by finding my mentor in the company's L&D department and networking - not for a job, but for recommended books and idea sharing. I also started volunteering to present at a nonprofit for underprivileged young adults, so I was able to start getting more experience in facilitation.
For a day-to-day, I typically meet with department stakeholders, create some content or documentation, and manage our L&D programs.
Good luck and I hope this helps!
LDS1 took my most recommended path: finding a mentor where you're currently employed. If there isn't someone willing to mentor you, you can try joining online communities/groups for L&D people to get a feel for current developments in the field and do some networking. It may also help to identify your existing transferrable skills and take a training course to hone or add to them - not just for the training, but to meet other professionals.
