advertising was never art because it was advertising.
it was art because it was inspiring, disruptive, beautiful, intriguing, controversial etc
that was (mostly) a long time ago.
it could still happen today
much less likely but still worth a shot:
innovative art can break thro & define a generation😎

Advertising really is the art of persuasion. It is about getting into people’s minds, making them feel something, and moving them to act. That takes creativity, empathy, and a real sense of craft.
The truth is the industry hasn’t lost its magic because of AI or money pressures. It has lost its magic because too many of us stopped believing in it. We started treating it like a job to get through instead of a craft to be proud of.
If we only see advertising as commerce, then of course nobody cares. But when we treat it as storytelling that shapes culture, it becomes something people remember and talk about.
AI cannot take that away. What can kill it is our own cynicism. If we still care, then it is on us to prove this industry still matters.
Was this meant to persuade us of something we can all see with our own eyes? The industry isn’t “dying because we stopped believing” it’s dying because corporations have realized the juice isn’t worth the squeeze. They can get way better results with much less. Traditional ads are a bloated, narcissistic, cesspool.
Advertising isn’t art now and nobody cares that commercials are created, start to finish, by humans.
I’m going to disagree with this statement, because the use of Ai in commercials is highly restricted. Advertising agencies require that all work be copyrightable which most generative Ai that comes straight from prompts can not be. Elements of work maybe Ai generated, but fully Ai work has to be disclosed and is open to outside manipulation.
A lot of artists can’t make a living making art in a capitalist society…advertising was frequently the compromise.

Never been art. Anybody who thought otherwise was delusional.
“Ars Gratia Pecuniae.” Classic poster ads that now get framed and hung as decoration. Absolut Vodka ads at the height of the magazine era. The BMW film series and art cars. There’s lots of ads that use all the tools of art to create culturally memorable works. But none of it has ever been art because it’s not the work of a single creative vision. And artists have always been fine lending their skills out to make a living.
What’s different about the current environment is that the ability to put a creative work in front of people has become wildly hijacked by a few companies whose own choices warp all kinds of expression. They would love to make AI content acceptable across society so they can also own the means of content production. Creating any AI ads only helps those few companies, because once it’s accepted, no one else will be able to compete.
At least that’s the plan. Who’s up for not letting it happen?
PRO TIP: Advertising was always a craft. Never an art.
(Thought those in the business desperate to be considered “artists” would try to convince themselves of it).

Agree, nobody will give a fark. People just want whatever it is they are forced to watch, to go away as quickly as possible. Whether it was shot by a hot director from Biscuit or put together by a grub using Veo 3 and Premier in between sending money to his favorite Only Fans actor.
It’s amazing how some people within our own industry don’t appreciate a great ad and the craft that goes into it.
Whether u want to consider it art or not, I don’t think you can argue that advertising doesn’t blend various art forms from comedy writing to animation to cinematography for a business purpose… many ads just do it very poorly.
I mean it may not be art but I’ve seen normal non ad folks absolutely ripping into spots made with AI (coca cola, NFL)
Advertising is literally supposed to make people care. But we became puppets for scared clients long ago.
To be fair, the art world was one of the pioneers of ai 🤖
Advertising AT BEST is corporate propaganda masquerading as art. Just because the Big Bad Wolf is wearing a muumuu doesn’t make it grandma.
Hot take i guess.
Advertising is art. Definition of art is subjective. High art. Low art. Commercial art. What is art exactly? Those Renaissance paintings and sculptures…almost all commissioned by wealthy patrons as displays of power and wealth. Not so different from brands.
We tend to think of art as pure expression and free interpretation. The idea of pure art is a modern phenomenon. Art has almost always needed patrons and benefactors and created with reason. Advertising is a much different medium, but its intentions have a lot of parallels.
Good point. Intention matters. But I’d argue advertising’s intent isn’t only to make money. At its best, it’s built to move people—shift perceptions, create cultural moments, spark emotions. That doesn’t erase the craft or artistry in how it’s done.
And intention itself is subjective. Banksy has intention. So does the 80-year-old woman down the street painting butterflies with curly antennas. Both count. It’s a spectrum.
When Nike can make the world stop for a moment and reflect on or reconsider the abilities of a Special Olympian. Art.
Art is subjective.
If you say it’s art, it is.
That’s it. — R Mutt
I mean a lot of people who used to make ads are gonna care.
They’ve all aged out of the business.
In a world where some commercials are all AI and some are all manmade, the human-generated ones will annoy people a little less, but nobody but agency folk will know why.

Some might argue that proves it IS art
When people comment on YouTube “usually I hate ads but I love this one,” or even better share an ad on social media because they love it so much, it’s working not because of the brand promise, 15 minutes could save you 15% or whatever. It’s working for the part that feels like art.
