After 9 months of unemployment, I finally landed a job as a Brand Lead Designer with a pay and title bump from my last position. What worked for me: 1) Invest serious time into your portfolio—push it until it’s the absolute best it can be. 2) Be specific on LinkedIn searches. Instead of just “graphic designer,” filter for location + remote + “under 100 applicants.” Applying early to new listings with fewer applicants made all the difference compared to jobs with 100+ apps already stacked.

Congratulations! Any advice or suggestion on what you built your portfolio with? I hear people suggest Framer? Or did you use Wix, or Wordpress?

I need to work on my portfolio but don’t even know where to start. ☹️

That's awesome, congratulations! And that's some really good advice. I honestly need to practice with LinkedIn search filters, I realize mastering how to use them is so important.

This is really great to hear. I know there are so many people discouraged by the current job market. Thank you for sharing this.

I've been unemplyed for 6 months now (over 10 yrs experience as Principal Designer). I'm finally getting responses (have a call tomorrow) and you are spot on. I started filtering exactly as you say and apply early, hybrid if possible, less applicants. I wanted full remote but might have to do hybrid in this job market.

Congrats on landing your new role! Did networking factor into your success at all or were you mainly cold applying to most of your roles?

This roll was completely cold. I was one of the first ten applicants which I think helped a lot.

I have a question for you: Do you think going back to school for an associate degree in Graphic Design would be useful, or is it better to use platforms like Coursera and YouTube to become a self-taught designer?

like

It would depend on your age and financial situation. If you're under 24 and can do it without going into debt, maybe. I would say this is not a profession you should get into if you are not absolutely in love with it and if you're asking the question it's probably a no. There is not a lot of money in it unless you're willing to devote about 10 years becoming exceptional.

AKQA deactivated my account after a week upgrade. I was not given a chance to at least break even with what I had deposited. My former manager was strict and seems not caring about me as an employee who failed to make a referral, I felt I was treated like a trash ready for disposal anytime. AKQA never returned my P4,000 deposit which there are other similar companies which pay better but don't treat their employees like they're no good or something dispensable.

What advice would you give a mid designer to hit lead brand designer?

I was in a marketing section of a saas company but I did like 90% grunt work. So didn’t really make huge strides in design skill development or portfolio. It was my only job out of school.

I would take the projects that had the biggest impact or title attached to them and rework them into something that looks visually impressive. I would also think about what skills you want to develop. I knew I wanted to get better at Redshift so I could enhance some of my simpler designs with 3D to make them stand out and add that to skills I could offer to a company.

Many congratulations!
