Am I expecting too much feedback and training? I just recently started at a mid sized firm after a few years as a prosecutor. I’ve been there a month and have received almost no actual feedback and no real training. I’m given assignments and maybe a few minutes of explanation and an example. When I send the partners my work and ask them to review it, they usually don’t even respond unless I ask multiple times. Is this normal?

Also, yes. You learn by osmosis. Once in a blue moon someone will take more than 3 minutes to explain something.

If you leave them alone and kick ass at your job, they will like you more. It’s about always being a net positive on the balance sheet. Time is money and it’s time to make it rain… And other capitalist jargon. They’ll probably expect you to be doing self-improvement on your own time, also. Good luck!

You’ve been practicing for years, and as a prosecutor I’d expect that you’ve been to trial multiple times. Giving assignments, an explanation, and an example seems appropriate. I wouldn’t expect hand-holding.

(Apologies in advance for the long reply. I used to struggle with this exact same thing for YEARS…)

Have you gotten any comments on your work indicating it’s not satisfactory? If not, most likely this means you are fine and your partners don’t see the need to criticize your work. I used to be very unsure of myself in my job and would second guess myself with every thing I did or said (diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood so I have “I’m not smart enough and I never will be” issues 🤪) so if I didn’t get 1) corrections to be made and feedback on how to do better next time, or, in the alternative 2) i work really hard on a project, am super proud of my work product, then not receive any compliments on my work, I would feel SO deflated. I am not sure why some of us depend on praise and compliments when 99% of people in this industry are perfectly fine without it, but I digress.

That was back when I was a recent college grad at my first big girl job and was scared as hell to do anything at all that was not explicitly asked of me. Today, I have gotten used to the fact that no feedback is good feedback. As long as your partner continuously comes to you with assignments, you know you are doing a good job and you are gaining their respect. In the end, this will boost your confidence as an attorney big time. There really is no better feeling when you realize your coworkers, especially those “above” you, just trust you to perform and get the job done because you have a reliable track record.

What is the best way to attract a new mate? I got out of a 7 year relationship (he was cheating on me for half of it) and I’m so confused on where to even start. I have a therapist and working on my trust issues - but I have self confidence issues. I’ve been burned for being ‘unattractive’. But I’ve seen girls that are objectively more unattractive than me have mates. So it must be a confidence issue? Those girls seem to glow while I am so sad. Or it’s the guys I go on dates with?

Dear All Fisbowls,

I have a query. Request all of yours suggestion and if you have done something similar to this please share.

You have resigned and have offer in hand suppose 15 fixed.
Meanwhile you get another offer but they will give around 17 fixed.
I am thinking to quote my in hand offer as 17 fixed with changes in it and share it with them.
So that they can give me around 20 fixed.
Request to share honest detail here.

on the way to an interview this morning eating a sandwich. I walked past a homeless man who had a stray cat perched on his lap. He asked for a bite of sandwich to feed them both as they hadn’t eaten in days. I gave the whole sandwich over and headed off to the interview. As I got to the interview room there was a large executive chair facing away from me. The chair turned and on top was a mirror. When looking in the mirror I could see the cat. I am the cat. Transactional junior associate in biglaw. Working for a dedicated practice group rather than in an associate pool. For the past few months, I’ve been loaned to another practice group for a good chunk of time. While the people are decent and the hours aren’t terrible, I detest the work and don’t see a future in this new practice. My main partner says it should end in the next month, but I don’t expect that to happen. Is it a terrible idea to ask to be taken off?

Negotiating a settlement. I’m at $10k, opposing counsel is at $20k. My client won’t go higher than $15k. OC has come down to 17.5k and says his client won’t budge from that. Do I offer 12.5k so we can hopefully meet in the middle at 15k? Is that how the settlement game is played? Seems dumb we can’t just say let’s meet in the middle now and be done with this. (I’m a first year, first time negotiating a settlement on my own and I don’t want to screw this up!)

Horrible anxiety about considering a new job....
I was one of the big firm stealth layoffs in covid and joined a boutique firm in Sept. They came sort of close to matching my salary but I moved to SoCal and have an opportunity to jump back in to big law and get $100k raise. The people at the small firm are so nice, but hours are nuts and if I’m going to work this much, I might as well get paid more, right? Is it too soon? How do you tell them when the managing partner took you under his wing?

Other than partner track, salary/benefits, and switching from coverage to general comm lit, what qualities of the move should I be thinking about as I weigh my options? I've never worked at another firm.
