It’s fairly lock-step unless you’re at a small firm. Few years as an Analyst> same for associate Associate>VP/Principal can be terminal for some folks > then either MD or another director/SVP level as a step in between until MD. Depends on org structure. Work becomes less about models and more about sourcing deals/opps & negotiations. Comp is highly predicated on AUM

If you’re at a smaller GP, promotions might not be as predictable. But if you’re at a midsize to large LP, you should be getting promoted every 2 years.
It’s easy to be promoted from analyst to associate. But transitioning from associate to VP is harder because this is usually when you have to start sourcing. You’re not judged on your modeling skills anymore, but rather on your relationship building and deal/people management.
