Cannot recommend "Invest like the Best" and "Capital Allocators" enough!
I'd also read the Bain Private Equity report that's released yearly. https://www.bain.com/insights/topics/global-private-equity-report/
WSO is good, though I highly recommend jumping into modeling if you'd like to familiarize yourself with the bread and butter concepts of finance. asimplemodel.com is a great starting point, though it's quite a bit if you're coming from a non-finance background.
Finally, if you have a tech slant, "This Week in Startups" has some insightful conversations on growth equity at times. Brad Gerstner and Jason Lemkin are two fairly public figures in the Growth world. I'd track them online via podcasts, Youtube, or Twitter.
I'd also highly suggest networking with PE professionals from your firm or college to discuss the transition. It really helped me contextualize my gaps and a develop an understanding of where my interests fit into the vast investing landscape. The better of a fit you are, the more you can cater your story to the right firm and find a good fit.
Better question is why not. Since when was PE forever? It's usually a build your resume and get out sort of deal
